Superb atmospheric and dramatic rendition of Britten's Four Sea Interludes from Peter Grimes. Sitting watching/listening to HD with the French windows open and a long cool one to hand. Even though I'm completely landlocked I swear I can hear the sea!

A bit of crowd pleasing Rachmaninov and VW to finish.... bliss.

It has been wonderful so far, and I agree with you both.

I love Rachmaninov's Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini.

    Gorgeous.

I can see you at the piano. :D

What is that instrument - I always think it's a piccolo but it isn't.

Why did they start the new season with a new piece and the BB stuff ?

I gave it a try LIVE but couldn't stand more than a few minutes , I then tried again with the BB segment but again the noise just left me cold . Surely they should have started with some well known melodic stuff ??

How many people will have just turned over as I did ??
Luckily I recorded it and will fast forward it through to the good bits you referred to above .

The first one was only on for 4 minutes:

You'll have missed Benjamin Britten, and Rachmaninov too? It's been fabulous so far. :)

Edit: oops sorry i see you did mention Benjamin Britten.

    BRAVO! Bravo!

Such a crowd there for the opening night.

I'd love to go to the Royal Albert Hall.

    Has anyone been? :)

Na I tried Benjamin , fast forwarded through bits of it but it did nothing for me at all.

Loving the Paganini piece now ..... Incidentally , if the pianist can play this piece from memory why can't the orchestra ??

I love the Proms. The last remaining outpost of empire. Heaven for a colonialist like me.

How do you feel about the two upcoming Dr Who Proms ??

For myself , I hate the idea and won't be watching them .

Shame that following the demise of the BBC HD channel, this is one of the very few concerts we'll get in HD and 5.1 sound this season.

There seems to be a bit of a Wagner overdose this year..

    and absolutely no Faure :(

I see on the events calendar that Gorecki's 'Symphony of Sorrowful Songs' will be on.

I'll need my box of tissues handy for that one. Is there a more heart-tugging symphony than that one? I recorded a documentary about it but could only watch it the once because it was so heartbreakingly sad. At the same time, it is a beautiful piece of music, though.

I'm looking forward to Mahler - especially his Symphony no. 2.

I don't like Doctor Who and I'm not keen on Wagner, either. I'll have to see if I'm in the mood to watch them or not.

Didn't know it was happening. There's enough music in Doctor Who to fill TWO Proms? One would think just doing the theme song as a joke would be enough. Something fun for the Last Night. Personally I prefer the Proms to focus on songs and music revolving around Britain's imperial greatness.

    I adore Fauré's Requiem.

I was hoping for Beethoven's Sixth - Pastoral Symphony, alas. They'll be doing his Ninth, though. :)

Faure's Requiem is my most played cd.

A very lightweight start tonight. Doesn't bode well for the rest of the series. Some of the programmes are quite shocking in their simpleness. x.
