Hi all
My 6 year old Dell desktop has finally died. The hard drives have been failing for ages: click click click blue screens etc. have considered replacing them but to be honest the whole machine is probably very out dated.
I'm not looking for anything ultra powerful. To me it seems like everyone has gone power crazy, always wanting more than is required for what they need from. PC.
I have been able to do video edit, file share and surf the web with just 1GB of ram and whatever a 6 year old processor is.
What I definitely don't want is a Mac and I cannot stand Windows8, having now tried it out a few times
With all of the above in mind, please can anyone recommend a ready built for purchase value PC?
Perhaps it should be another Dell, which has been a workhorse for me; running almost 24/7 for 6 years!
I have looked at the PC's in PC World, but most of them are hideous, very plasticky and have Windows8 as standard (Windows7 is excellent).

Tesco Direct's laptops section has a filter for operating systems and lists some Win7 models although a lot of them are "currently unavailable". Unfortunately their "desktop" section only seems to list monitors, not computers.
Have you tried any of the utilities for Win8 which largely revert the user interface to that of previous versions of Windows? As well as restoring the Start button and its menu, most of these also have options to boot in desktop mode, and to disable the Charm icons. Many people feel that one of these utilities can make Win8 acceptable. Most are free or very low cost. List here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Start_Menu_replacements_for_Windows_8
Have you considered a Chromebook, or Linux?

Perhaps Windows8 is something I just need to get used to. I would hate to be missing out on features just because I am not over keen on the new style.
@John: Hi, I am definitely more interested in desktops to laptops. I have my iPad for entertainment and for use away from a fixed location. I know that clever marketing is convincing the world that desktops are the way to go now, but of course we all know that this isn’t true... If you are happy to work from a fixed location then a desktop surely always wins.
