Saw the show this evening. I am indifferent to Lisa Riley but judging by the reception she got she was a popular member of the show and I thought came over OK. A lot of the show is what I would describe as cheesy but harmless enough. There is content related to Emmerdale and as I never watch it I was not particulary intersted in it. Lisa is a sort of show host and although involved in several of the routines the main dancing is done by Natalie and Ian. Artem dances with Lisa and also does a couple of numbers with Natalie but he does seem underused. There are two other male and female dancers who join in with routines as well. I think it is unbalanced with only one female Strictly pro dancer and I am in admiration of Natalie for dancing so beautifully throughout the show. Ian is a delight as always but Artem is wasted IMO.

I went to the show on Wednesday evening which was opening night (though they had done a matinee that afternoon). Craig came on stage at before the show and did an intro telling us how nervous the cast were and how exciting it was to be doing the show for the first time (). The Plymouth crowd seemed to be up for a good time and gave all the cast a great welcome. Lisa seemed very popular.

There are 5 musician/singers who are on stage the whole time and interact with the dancers, even doing a bit of dancing here and there. Ricky, the guitarist, seemed very charismatic :). The four supporting dancers are not ballroom and latin specialists but more 'stage dancer' types. They seemed fairly versatile, especially the two girls.

Lisa is very much cast in the role of star of the show which will be off-putting to some. I wanted to see Artem and was curious to see Ian and Natalie for the first time, so I went despite Lisa. On the whole, she came across well and didn't get on my nerves and there was plenty to enjoy about the show, but regardless of my feelings about Lisa, I think there's too much made of her story here. A couple of scenes in particular could have been pruned.

The format is a series of episodes, vignettes, narratives etc. Some of it is Lisa (too much of it) or the pro dancers speaking directly to us about their 'story' which will often be illustrated with a dance, sometimes involving Lisa, sometimes with her narrating whilst the cast dance. It all meshes together pretty well and I have to give Craig credit for a really well produced show - it's not high art :p, but it is a lot of fun and well done.

I agree with the previous poster that it needs another dancer for Artem. He dances with Natalie, with Ian and Nat and with the supporting dancers, but when Lisa is on stage, he partners her and there's a very noticable change of gear. So a group dance will strike up, Artem and the other dancers are in full-on jive mode, audience is getting into it, Lisa comes in and then Artem has to step down several notches :(. All that said, she does pretty well.

    Natalie is wonderful throughout.

The pros reveal some of their vital statistics (literally) and how they came to be dancers, but no real secrets :p (but perhaps folk on DS know more than is healthy about them anyway and the general public will be learning new stuff) :D.

On the first night Ian and Natalie were clearly nervous speaking to the audience and Ian went awry at one point, but they'll grow in confidence, I'm sure. Nat - again - is lovely. Artem seemed very at ease with it and didn't gabble or stumble and was able to interact with the crowd in little ways here and there. (That's my boy!).

I've posted lots more detail on the Kara and Artem thread if you're interested (in two reports in spoilers) - might be too Artem-ised for here ;)

For all that I would have reduced Lisa's role and had more dancing, it's a good show and, if you don't have to pay through the nose to see it, I'd recommend it :).

Thanks for that fridgesoup - it reads as though you had a good time with just a tad too much of Lisa :) I guess bits will be fine-tuned as the shows tours much like when you go and see a theatre production on first night and final night: a lot of the initial clumsiness is edited out.

BIB - yes - that's about the long and the short of it ;). Got to say though, the rest of the audience really liked her....

Just home from seeing Strictly Confidential in Bristol , so thought I would give a review on the show. Got to Bristol early, so thought I would check out where the theatre is . Just walking back to get some lunch when who should be walking up to the theatre but Mr Waite, looking gorgeous as ever. ( sorry as one of Ian's angels this might be a bit Ian baised!) Gave me a big hug, and I asked him how the show was going, said it was great but hard work as it is a full on dance show. Everyone had been getting injuries, even now he had a sore side and Natalie a stiff neck.
Strange experience over lunch when 50 naked cyclists rode passed all ringing their cycle bells and shouting! Not sure if that is a common occurence in Bristol on a Saturday!.
Anyway took my seat in the theatre and Ian was right it was very close! Lot of blue rinse brigade there and unfortunately a lot of empty seats so the crowd were a bit flat. As for the show, well I wasn't sure what to expect, but have to say I was very pleasantly suprised. Its a real variety show, with the band and singers on the stage the whole time and joining in the show. The show mainly revolves around Lisa, but she is quite funny and likeable, what amazed me was how much dancing was involved and how much Ian and Natalie were on the stage. They must be exhausted especially after a Fitsteps session & a show yesterday and two shows today. They must be dancing for well over an hour with lots of costume changes There are some beautiful dances, lots of rhumba's, an old favourite, and an amazing tango with Natalie being fought over by Ian and Artem ( won't go into any more details so as not to spoil it for anyone) It was quite good being at the front as you could see at the sides: like Ian falling over as he went on stage, a quick wave from Natalie from behind the curtain, Artem whacking Nat with his arms whilst he was spinning around ,Ian nipping off stage to quickly tie his shoe lace ( too quick a change) and Ian slipping and almost dropping Natalie. The bad point about being so close, was seeing right up Lisa's mini skirt in the second half, and the unattractive hole in her tights in a very unflattering place! They have quite a script to reel off about themselves and their Strictly life, and I think Ian feels more at ease with it than Natalie. To me Artem always sounds a bit bit bored and false when he talks, but have to say he got a lot of cheers from the crowd. Natalie looks amazing so slim and toned and has some gorgeous dresses. All in all an entertaining shows, and for us Ian & Nat fans a show that does not disapoint. Have to agree I think Artem gets the short straw, he danced with Lisa several times, but it was quite slow and a lot of repetitive steps, hardly taxing. Not sure what they were expecting in Bristol but there were a lot of guys dressed in black with celebrity security written on them!
Enjoyable show , with lots of dancing, great supporting cast of dancers and singers who were really part of the show and not a bad way to spend a rainy afternoon in Bristol. and can't wait to see it again in Southampton with a bit more angelic support to cheer on Ian and Nat

Great to see the reports so far. I've put mine in the Kara and Artem thread here if anyone wants to see it. http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showthread.php?p=66434694&posted=1#post66434694

Was your show in the afternoon or evening Red Kitewatcher? Our Friday evening show in Bristol seemed well attended with lots of audience participation.

Hi, guys - I posted a review of the Bristol show on the Kara and Artem Appreciation Thread, but this is a less Artem-centred version: :)

    A-MA-zing show, DAH-lings! Phantasmagorical…

I don’t need to put this review in spoilers, do I? I’m guessing that people won’t visit the Strictly Confidential thread if they don’t want the details but, to be honest, my memory is so poor and the dances come so thick and fast that I really can’t remember enough detail to spoil anybody’s pleasure in what is a hugely enjoyable show.

I wasn’t going to see this show, honest, guv. The notion of spending an evening watching Lisa Riley gurning and lusting over Artem filled me with gloom and despondency. But then I was persuaded to go when it was pointed out that Natalie and Ian were also in the show. That convinced me – Natalie has been my favourite female pro dancer since she burst onto our screens dancing with Ricky Whittle. I can remember being bewildered by all the flack she got from the forum for being nakedly ambitious – so unbecoming in a girl… And everybody loves Ian, don’t they? I think it’s compulsory or something because I’ve never read a bad word about him. Quite right, too, he’s a sweetie.

Anyway, on with the show. It opens with the theme tune of Strictly but that’s where the similarity with the TV show ends. Imagine, if you will, Tommy and Andrea, two of the singers on the show, plus Trevor (the man with the hat) and Barnaby (wielding a trombone) drifting on to the dance-floor and interacting with the dancers. Imagine substituting Brucie with Lisa Riley, but get her to talk about her own life (both professional and personal) and illustrate her story with music and dance. Get the professional dancers to talk, too, about their lives and love of dancing. Put an end to the speculation (if there ever was any) and get Ian Waite to talk openly about being gay. Encourage Artem to talk about how he and Kara fell in love and were hounded by the press (illustrate this with a lovely rumba danced by Artem and Natalie to Emeli Sandé’s Read All About It). Have lots and lots of costume changes, some interaction with the audience and get Natalie to dance her socks off. And there you have it – Strictly Confidential.

I read that Lisa got the biggest cheer from the audience in Plymouth. We’re a little more discerning in Bristol, since it was my impression that the loudest applause was reserved for Artem. The applause for Natalie and Ian was more muted at the start of the evening, but the crowd roared their approval at the end of the show – Natalie was sensational. I’m in admiration of her stamina, because she’s on a LOT, dancing with both Ian and Artem. She may be only half an inch shorter than Artem in her stockinged feet, but they are surprisingly well matched. She is a beautiful dancer and it was a joy to see a good balance of ballroom dancing as well as the crowd-friendly Latin. She dances two Viennese Waltzes in a row, one with Ian and one with Artem, which are both spell-binding. And she is both beautiful and thoroughly NICE. I am developing a bit of a girl crush. :o

But Artem is also a revelation – so gorgeous and talented (IMO) but also relaxed and natural on stage. At one point, Artem explained how he was a week late joining Strictly’s professionals for rehearsal because of visa problems. A lady in the front row yelled, ‘I’ll marry you, Artem!’, which got a huge laugh from the audience and a guffaw from Artem. Bless him – he leant over and thanked her, even referring to it later in the evening by joking what a good evening it had been as he’d had a marriage proposal as well as a great audience reaction to the entire show. He really has blossomed as a performer as well as a dancer (if that makes sense).

If anything, I was a little disappointed with Ian’s contribution. I shouldn’t be, because there’s nothing wrong with it – or him. Maybe he was just overpowered by the other dancers and some loud personalities. And then, it's very difficult to keep your eyes off the mesmerising Natalie. At one point Ian reminisced about the day he got the call saying he was going to be on Strictly and how it was one of the best days of his life. At which point my quiet little friend sitting next to me suddenly turned fierce and yelled out ‘WE WANT YOU BACK!’… :)

The other revelation of the evening is that Lisa Riley wasn’t nearly as annoying as I’d expected her to be. She is light on her feet, works hard and there’s something very winning about her determination and her refusal to be judged by the judgmental. She also does a really good cameo, an audition piece from Topless. On the strength of that performance, I’d employ her as an actress, if not as a dancer. A couple of the vignettes don’t work as well, in my opinion, and I got irritated by the running gag that she resented the others stealing her limelight. Her part is a little top heavy (pun intended) but there’s enough from the others to make that a minor irritation rather than a major flaw.

The production is slick and well-judged, with a good mix of music and dance. All in all, I was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed myself and I could easily be tempted to see it again. Go and see it – you won’t be disappointed and I promise I don’t get a commission on ticket sales… :p

Hey Peeve, think the powers to be read your review! The bit about about Lisa getting annoyed by other stealing her limelight was only in her opening dialogue. There was a couple of references afterwards about Artem preferring to dance with the pro dancers but nothing over the top!

I'm glad everyone who has seen the show has enjoyed it; part of me would quite like to see it, but I can't bring myself to buy tickets to sit and watch a certain person who made me cringe on Strictly!

Got to be honest, I felt the same but Lisa was great, she played her part well and there is so much excellent dancing.

Got to agree with you there Kaycee. Also for me, there isn't a more central London venue which would make it easier to buy a ticket. I really don't think there is enough attraction about the show to cause me the hassle commute out to Wimbledon and then back home afterwards. Anyway I think I already have a commitment on the Wimbledon date.

gosh! I have to say the chance to see Ian, Natalie and Artem dancing would be enough of an attraction for me to go to the show if I had the chance. Lisa or no Lisa! And the reports even from those with similar misgivings about her involvement seem to support that.:)

Totally agree Tipi - I couldn't bear Lisa on the show (and I mean she provoked serious rage issues :o) but she was far less annoying on stage and entertained the crowd well. To be honest I couldn't even tell you what her dancing was like as she is always dancing on stage with other people and with dancers like Artem, Ian and Natalie they are such amazing dancers I found that I couldn't take my eyes off them.
Basically I just wanted to say, I really wasn't going to go due to the Lisa factor and only booked my tickets 3 days before and am so glad I went. :)

I have to agree with Tipi. I was really (and I mean REALLY ) 'tired' of Lisa by the end of last series and was gutted to hear Craig had built the show around her. I'm afraid she was about the last person I wanted to see Artem partnered with, but.....the show's fun, well produced, there's lots and lots of good dancing and, yes, lots of Lisa, but she's tolerable, at the very least. Blimey, there were even moments when I found myself quite liking her :p.

ETA - Emma's right. you don't really watch Lisa when the dance numbers are on.

Excellent show thoroughly recommended go and see it. The Pro dancers are amazing and the rest of the cast are excellent

Artem is even more handsome when you see him close up and his dancing is just something to behold.

A show that sizzles from start to finish, much better than SCD on tour
