I think that telethons have lost their appeal largely because of the way TV itself has changed.
Back in the days of four channels all closing around midnight, the notion of an entertainment show running for hours until the beginning of the following morning was an exciting novelty and that alone compelled you to watch, but of course these days the novelty isn't there because people are able to watch hundreds of channels around the clock - and as a result, people are not prepared to watch a TV show continuously for seven hours or thereabours.
Another part of the problem is that these shows were built around seeing big stars appear and other celebrities and personalities doing their party pieces, but again that can be seen anytime in a whole host of different places; in the case of the latter, ITV practically built their schedule around that kind of thing in recent years.
I'd go as far as to say that telethons don't work on channels that don't attract the biggest audiences.
I remember Sky One used to do one In the mid 90s for the Variety Club's Gold Heart Day appeal and it only lasted a couple of years because hardly anybody watched it.
What annoys me about telethons these days. They tell how much they recommend you should give. Years ago it was whatever you give is appreciated. I notice that now you can text five or ten.
