BIB. Anyone who deprives themselves of food and water from sunrise to sunset without a medical reason isn't sane to me.
I would agree with this. I think it's rather dangerous actually. Isn't there the possibility of people becoming dehydrated, especially in the summer heat?
My recollections are obviously confused. Thanks for the clarification. Edited: Is there any particularly reason why she had to eat fish every Friday?
Fridays in the Roman Catholic faith are days of penance because Friday is considered the day Christ was crucified, Christ being the sacrificial lamb it is considered appropriate to abstain from flesh meat being red meat or poultry in honour of Christ`s passion suffering and death, seafood being fish is allowed to substitute flesh meat, hence the term "Fish Fridays" it is also where the old custom of Brits eating fish or fish and chips on Fridays originated from.
The Islamic tradition of Ramadan is very much like Lent it is also a season of fasting almsgiving charity and penance.
The practice during lent for Roman Catholics of fasting and abstaining is penance and the money saved from fasting and abstaining is to be given to the poor or charity.
Lent lasts 40 days not counting the Sundays because Sundays are a solemnity and a day off each week from fasting in preparation for the great feast and solemnity of Easter, Easter is also given a 50 day season which is 10 days longer than Lent because it is considered the greatest celebration of the liturgical year. The first 8 days of Easter are given an Octave which means for the first 8 days from Easter Sunday till the following Sunday is given the same rank as a solemnity its like 8 Sundays in a row.
Solemnities are ranked as the most important of feasts and each of them doesn`t begin at midnight but at sundown the night before, the practice of great feasts beginning at sundown is very similar to the way Muslims begin Ramadan and the celebrations of Eid at sundown and so is the case for Jewish festivals.
For instance Christmas being a solemnity begins at sundown on December 24th not midnight, which is why some countries where Roman Catholicism is the national faith presents and gifts are opened during the evening of December 24th and not Christmas morning.
Christmas like Easter for Roman Catholics is not just a one day celebration but a 2 week celebration ending either on the feast of Epiphany (January 6th) or the feast of the Baptism of the Lord which is a week later.
I hope I have explained the ins and outs of the faith.
I would agree with this. I think it's rather dangerous actually. Isn't there the possibility of people becoming dehydrated, especially in the summer heat?
I expect it's harder in the UK when Ramadan falls in summer because our days are very long from sunrise to sunset at this time of year.
It's not meant to be easy though - the whole point of it is that it's difficult and a deprivation.
If someone felt unwell I'm sure they could break the fast.
Exactly, not to mention its patriarchal structures and religious dogmas and its prejudice against certain sections of society all in the name of myths created centuries ago with no scientific proof or backing.
Whilst I respect peoples right to be religious and protections against discrimination I do not support religion or its perceived right to interfere with modern secular life.
Which is why I left the bloody thing a decade ago.
I would agree with this. I think it's rather dangerous actually. Isn't there the possibility of people becoming dehydrated, especially in the summer heat?
Not for religious reasons but for diabetic fasting blood tests I regularly fast for 12-14 hours. As I work shifts that time can be my "working day". It really isn't that hard or that dangerous. Most diabetics will be used to doing this too.
Wrong again, Roman Catholics are required to abstain from meat on ALL Fridays of the year unless a major feast known as a "Solemnity" Major feasts would include
The feast of St Peter and St Paul.
The solemnity of Mary Mother of God.
The solemnity of the most sacred heart of Jesus.
St Joseph`s day.
Christmas day.
solemnity of the Epiphany
The Friday during the Octave of Easter.
The solemnity of the Annunciation.
The Immaculate conception.
Also within the Roman Catholic faith during the season of lent Catholics are required to fast on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday eating only one full meatless meal on those days, they are also encouraged to do extra fasts during this season of lent though the extra ones are optional but Ash Wednesday and Good Friday are not optional neither is giving up meat on all Fridays of the year.
Ex Roman Catholic.
Meatless/fish on fridays is hardly fasting. On that basis vegetarians are fasting
Thanks for the thought, captain, sir. I wasn't attempting to be mischievous with this thread, but i will refrain from protesting (or posting) further on this thread.
What the hell is in the water that has so many people starting threads about Ramadan? Is Google not available for your silly questions or do you just want to start a fight.

Ok but I still don't get the child cruelty issue - children don't have to do it.
By the time they are old enough they decide if they want to, a bit like a child raised as an Anglican might decide whether to get confirmed or not.
A friend of mine at uni observed a very loose and watered down version of Ramadan which basically involved not eating treats, much as some Christians might give up chocolate for Lent. As is often the case the observance of such things is often on a spectrum.
It seems this thread is just a rather transparent attempt to have a go at muslims.... but failed because you got the facts wrong.
When my children were at primary school - about 9 or 10 - they had a couple of friends who really wanted to fast for Ramadam. They obviously saw it as a big, grown-up thing to do, and I think they fancied joining the grown-ups in the sundown meal as well. Their mothers insisted that they semi-fasted, still having water and a bit of food at midday. But they would have fasted if they had been allowed to.

No, but on Ash Wednesday and Good Friday Catholics are required to fast limiting themselves to only one full meal in a 24 hour period which must not include soups or stocks of milkshakes just one full meatless meal unless they are under a certain age or over a certain age or frail, pregnant or with some sort of disability that limits them from doing so.
Very similar rules apply to Ramadan young children are not required to fast neither are pregnant women, So I have no idea what you are attempting to claim that Muslims are by their religious traditions committing some form of child abuse.
Yes their religion is deeply patriarchal, yes their religion restricts the rights of women and oppresses gay people but Ramadan does not pose a threat to children.
But the same could be said for the Catholic faith also and the Jewish faith, all of which are patriarchal and hate homosexuals.

That info is way out of date. Meat-free fridays isn't required, its suggested. Fasting on Good Friday and Ash Wednesday only, and it means just one main meal during the day, and cut down breakfast and other meal (for those who have time/money for three big meals.) Fasting is coupled to charity-giving, donate what you have saved by eating less.
What the hell is in the water that has so many people starting threads about Ramadan? Is Google not available for your silly questions or do you just want to start a fight.
google is foreign territory for some posters ..... maybe its too infected with religion, or something.

Well there's a nice sweeping generalization for you. Which are the three religious denominations which have campaigned for years to be allowed to marry same sex couples?
I would agree with this. I think it's rather dangerous actually. Isn't there the possibility of people becoming dehydrated, especially in the summer heat?
Yes, then there's this, Hypoglycaemia - low blood sugar. There's a reason we get hungry, it's because our bodies require glucose in the blood.

Not so, the catholic faith makes it clear that in England and wales Catholics must abstain from meat.

Maybe people just find the whole concept very strange?. It feels like in this country we were beginning to consign religion (all religions) to the dustbin of the past. Where they belong.:) of course.
Now it seems as if they are back, in yer face and what is more it would appear that there is a requirement to respect them or else!.
My cousin used to work in some sort of office and they (the non-Muslims) were cheerfully informed that they should be careful not to eat at their desks (during Ramadan-a-ding-dong) lest it made the very few Muslims in the office feel uncomfortable!. If I was her I would have ordered several pizzas and a black forest gateau!.
As you can tell I am just sick and tired of hearing about patriarchal, misogynistic, homophobic religions.:( I feel really depressed about them.:(

They're nostalgic for the times when they could burn us at the stake for our atheism. Meanwhile, apostasy is still a capital offence in some countries.

I blame the schools - not teaching RE. <reaches for tin hat.>

They do though. And Ramadan / fasting is definitely still on the syllabus.

The practice was reintroduced in 2011 after years of optional abstinence since the 1980s.

The idea is to refrain from eating meat. Eating fish is not compulsory.
