. . . . and why not eh? The Pacific class of steam engines are worth remembering surely.

Engineering with great looks, magnificent machines.

Do you want another cookery programme instead? :D

Enjoyed seeing all the old footage, and it's a great story. Love that combination of innovation and style.

For me the programme was let down though by a weak script ("British Rail" mentioned as the nationalised name is 1948 for instance) and the somewhat haphazard use of images & film.

Must admit it is an uninspiring programme. They could have done it much better. Some good footage though. :)

Some interesting stuff. Hadn't known the Flying Scotsman spent some time across the pond.

Yes, could have done with someone like John Sergeant in his daft 'at and constantly grinning face, hamming it up in front of the camera.

    .....Only kidding.

The BBC apart from the current obsession with programmes about steam railways, have access to a lot of old film footage and have recently made a number of documentaries on many subjects with it. Some quite acceptable and obviously often good value for money.

This definitely looked rather cobbled together, but I though Barbara Flynn did a good job with what she was given, though it was a bit difficult not to nod off at certain points in the hour.

I'll take obsession with trains any day over obsession with ramming lesbian kisses down our throats or popstar super star whatevers. You can't please all of the people all of the time....sad though that people are so flippant. All these old timers walking around today with hearing problems, white finger, back trouble - all for nothing it seems .

As a lover of our engineering heritage, and a builder of miniature steam, I can recommend the Flying Scotsman book (the author was on tonight's programme).

If anyone enjoyed the vintage footage tonight, you might like these:

    Long live steam!

My original post wasn't meant to be derogatory, I actually like these programmes:)

A completely side issue - you can't search for this post for some reason. Could it be the : in the title that causes issues??
