i have travelled at LOT and i am struggling here. the only two that even come close are the following

The Habitat Hotel in New York (i love NY though) the hotel was disgusting and filthy, with blood in the bathroom and flees in the bed! thankfully i was only staying for one night (at £90 a night too! ) and dont forget about the old people who live in the hotel that wander round trying peoples door while dressed in there night clothes and shout at you in the elevator

My brother stayed there too . Like you he only stayed one night, said he felt as if he was in an asylum.

    Were you in Hammamet?

I was there in May, had a nice time, but it is more backward compared to European Med countries. The ride to the hotel from Monastir airport was a lot longer then we were told. It was nowhere near an hour, closer to two, not very nice at 3am (both ways).

The shop keepers were very annoying, but we didn't get too much hassle off them, after our first week they started to recognise us and realised we knew they were trying to rip us off, so just ignored us! :D
Yes! I was there for a week and travelled around the rest of the country the other week. Stayed in this beach front hotel - can't remember the name, but I do remember the cockroaches. Hope you didn't get food poisoning too!

No votes for magaluf yet I see?

Well, as a 'golden oldie' I have had several great holidays in Palma Nova, which is next to Magaluf. Always go off-season when the yoofs have gone home. Every evening, off to Monroe's Karaoke bar. Love Majorca.

Sorry....can't report any really bad holidays. Worst I suppose was Blackpool in the 1950s when we found ourselves covered in fleas from the B&B.

Norcliffe Hotel - Babbacombe Downs - Torquay

Torquay / Babbacombe were fine, the hotel ...

Fawlty Towers was 5 Star compared to this dump!!!

It's a mix of The Fast Show and The Shining!

OMG at you being on your own! No he always just booked flights and chose a hotel when he got there. I think he just picked up a leaflet at the airport and asked the driver to take him there. He said he didn't sleep a wink and was out of there as early as he could.

Is this the website you used? It looks quite nice

Lordy, I thought it had all been done up going by that site . Always check TripAdvisor before you book anything, I find them really good with honest opinions.

I was going to New York for a long weekend and the travel agent offered a great deal staying at the Howard Johnson Motel in Manhattan. I went on Trip Advisor and found pages of warnings to stay as far away from this hovel as possible plus photos of dead and live rodents in the rooms. I eventually chose the Bentley Hotel which was absolutely wonderful.
It pays to always research these places first although you do have to remember that some people on Trip Advisor will never be happy with anything anywhere. We stayed at a fantastic hotel in Cuba that generally had very good reviews but included a review from a couple in Surrey who checked out before they even saw their room because they thought the hotel was dated and dirty - and it must have been the cleanest hotel I've ever stayed in.

This is very true. You can generally tell the level-headed reviews from the frothing idiots though and if the majority of reviews are positive you'll probably be ok I find.

Absoluetly. I post on Trip Advisor a lot - both in the forums and hotel reviews - and there has been a big debate recently about the validity of some of the reviews.

The worry is that some reviews are being posted by the hotels themselves and others by rival hotels trying to discredit the. The general consensus seems to be that the 'fake' reviews are pretty easy to spot - generally they are by someone who hasn't posted a lot before, who hasn't been active in the forums for instance or they are so glowing or so bad that one immediately is put on one's guard!

I think it is still one of the best sites, though, for getting a good overview of hotels - as well as being useful in planning other aspects of a trip.

Totally agree Bevheth & Sylar, you can't please everyone. As you say you can usually spot the hard to please posters. I've just checked reviews for the hotel we are staying in over Christ & New Year and there are some crap reviews. We stayed in the same hotel last Christmas and didn't have a single complaint, and I'm quite fussy.

I think my friend got a bit of food poisoning, but it wasn't very severe, he was only ill one night.

We also spent most of our Second week away from the Resort, we did a tour of the Desert region and visited Tunis a few times. Compared to what other things we saw, Hammamet (but especially the Yasmine area) didn't really do Tunisia Justice, but I still had a great time!

Benidorm. It was booked last minute via Teletext and wasn't expecting the Ritz but the hotel was grimy, food old and stale, drinks watered down and pool was gross - people drink, eat and other things in it and i saw on kid cut her finger and bleed and she just stuck her finger in the pool to clean it! The town was just like being in any student town in the UK. I knew to expect this from somewhere like Benidorm but it was too much for me and didn't like it.

Brussels gets a mention to. Just had alot of bad luck on that holiday and wasn't impressed with the city.

Loved Kenya, Martinique, Prague and France though.

And i saw someone mentioned Club med holidays as the worst but i absoloutely loved them when i went with my parents.

    Dominican Republic,

    the beggars,
the interuptions on the beach every 2 minutes by people trying to sell you crap,
The signs on the beach saying "WARNING, we cannot guarantee your safety if you pass this sign"
The rip off prices that got cheaper as your skin got more tanned,
the being followed, harrassed and hounded in every shop you went by someone trying to force you to buy a cigar!

Give me commercialised tenerriffe or spain any day (even being an Englishman in Blackpool during the Scottish holiday period in the 70's was less intimidating than Dom Rep).

I just got back from Bulgaria and I have to say I really enjoyed it! I found it to be a lovely place.
However, there is one big drawback - it is difficult to get around without knowing Bulgarian (fortunately my dad is fluent so we didn't face this problem).
    When did you go there?

I went last century. We managed to work the bus system fine but the Rep hated the idea. I also hated the touts asking for money all the time "you rich people, why you want to wait for bus?".

The prostitutes in the hotels put me off too and the poverty. They treated their disabled people abmysmally. Varna was full of subways and a collection of people minus legs and eyes. It was ghastly. A real horror show!

I was so annoyed with the place I reduced my travelling companion to tears.

I did get some lovely pictures of Nessebur. I loved that little place.

People may not believe this (do not be taken in by the glossy brochure & TV adverts - it's all hype) but San--ls Antigua was .
Don't get me wrong it was a paradise but the staff seemed to loathe the British & treated us like scum. It was also full of very drunk, loud, opinionated, rude Yanks, especially NY'ers that would push in front all the time & slag off every other nationality too. Apparently they get the holiday in the same amount of dollars as we pay in sterling. (I would like to mention I don't think all Americans are like this, as we met a lovely couple from Texas).
We would never go back, even if we were given a free holiday there tbh .
