NEVER HEARD of anyone tipping anyone on a train before .....
It's quite normal over there.
Also, not as expensive as it sounds, as everyone tips you too, so it kind of evens out. You are usually up or down by a bit, but it averages out in the long run.
Things are much easier on the New York subway system as the other passengers will not only decide FOR you how much to tip, but they'll take it from you themselves, leaving you with absolutely nothing to do!

I was hoping it might be this simple. Cheers wolfie.
It's very easy to tip the officers whenever you enter California by road. Just hand over all your fruit and veggies and they'll let you go immediately.

OP, there's somewhere you should definitely visit while you're in the USA. It's in Ohio, on I-75 about 7 miles north of its intersection with I-70. Look it up on Google Maps, you'll love it, it's your kind of place!
Take you cheque book and that way you can tip them all. And I don't forget the person in front of you who let the door slam in your face. They a big tip.
It's no good writing them a cheque. They only accept checks.
What an odd thread. I will be shocked if the yanks let you in.
I'll be shocked if the OP makes it to the USA all by themselves. I really worry about the complete lack of initiative so many people seem to have. Are we sure this isn't a wind up? I want it to be a wind up...:o

Oh this reminds me of my greyhound bus journey round Cali. I tipped the bloke beside me and the girl sitting across the aisle but wasn't sure about the one in front or back. I asked the coffee girl when she came round and she laughed and said you from UK right? Well you have to tip every passenger on the bus so I did and they were all lovely thanking me for my 10 dollars a piece but not one of the buggers gave me a tip back!
Internal Flights are the worst, at least with a train you only tip the carriage you are in, with a flight it is the whole cabin. In addition you have to pay for your luggage as well. Take plenty of money especially if you are going to fly between places.
I hate having to go round slipping dollar notes under every guest room door in motels. That's why I've never stayed in one of those huge casino resort towers in Las Vegas.
I find it truly alarming that this needs to be said.
Yes, but bear in mind that you and I have visited the North American colonies and know that not only have some of the red indians been rounded up now and moved to reservations, but before long there might be shops and hotels built over there as well as saloons. Last time I went I saw an iron horse and they even had one of them new-fangled motor automobile things. Amazing!
I'm confused. Why would you tip the other passengers on the train? Surely, if you would give any kind of tip, it would be to the actual staff?
I've never been to USA so have no idea.
Don't ask me tommy, I found it ridiculous until I started this thread. I heard on a travel show that *all* Americans expect tips and applause, so I thought I should make sure.

I British, I give my advice for free :kitty:
If he tries to bribe his way past security checks at the airport he'll soon find out how willing they are to let him in :D:D
In fact - the OP had better be willing to let the Yanks in...as they get ready for that orifice check!
I'm still working out if this is a genuine windup or the OP is genuinely deluded.
EDIT: after having carried out four seconds of research - it's a windup...

Me and the missus went to get a train to San Diego, only a short journey. They wouldn't let her on, so I had to go on my own. Only had mine by chance.
Nothing suggested we were not local and they asked straight away for it. Not sure how it works for US residents.
Brilliant. Love it!

Those numbers tell you how much you have to tip in each town.
Is the OP feeling ok?

Seriously, you don't have to tip random people on the train; you tip people like waiters, cab drivers, etc.
As a slight alternative, maybe it was a light-hearted joke ?

Three people who have posted on this page seem unsure whether it's a "joke" or not ...
