  The Gizmo by Paul Jennings. I remember my teacher reading a chapter of it in a lesson to the class and immediately went home and demanded my mother buy me the book. It lead me to read many of his books that centered around people that find themselves in unusual situations, resulting in them self-reflecting on how they contributed to their predicament.
