There are 2 Fish and Chip shops in Thornton (just outside Blackpool) which have featured in the Fish & Chip Shop of the Year Award.

I've lived near Blackpool all my life and I agree it is a bit of a dump, but it's a unique dump. If you want a bit a "tat", like the Pleasure Beach, The Arcades and attractions like Tussauds then you'll enjoy it, but don't go looking for a "classy" holiday.
There are plenty of places close though which offer more upmarket surroundings. Lytham St Annes is very nice and you're not that far from the Lake District if you have transport.
