Did anybody here watch the olympic ceremony 3d?

I saw an article that quoted that over 100,000 people watched the Olympic opening ceremony 3d, what about you?

Yes, I watched it (and Wimbledon) in 3D, and whilst it adds another dimension to the viewing experience, I wasn't particularly impressed by the opening ceremony. I can't decide whether it's just a bit gimmicky at the moment, rather than the programme being produced with 3D in mind. Slightly off-topic, I'm surprised that ITV1 or C4 haven't produced any adverts in 3D on their Freeview HD channels, as I would've thought it would be a good marketing opportunity, at least in the short term. Terry, did you watch it in 3D?

I watched the Eurosport 3D version via Sky 3D. It was very good but undermined by the Alan Partridgesque commentators.

Yes and thoroughly enjoyed it, more so than I did with Wimbledon. I found Wimbledon more satistying in 2D in at least one respect because of the camera angle used. In 3D, the low angle shooting means it is hard to see where the ball lands on the other side of court. The Olympic opening ceremony had no such problem.

Yes, I watched in 3d. Although the overall effect was good, I feel it was let down by the lack of camera shots/angles as compared to the standard 2d version. Also the commentators often spoke over the arena commentary, which in itself could have been fed into the audio chain in the same way as the 2d audio feed was. At times it was almost as if the 3d BBC commentators had missed the technical rehearsals. I appreciate that given that it's relatively new technology, it probably not economically viable to have the same sort of blanket coverage as 2d, plus the fact they are still experimenting with what works (in terms of 3d presentation) and what doesn't.

I later watched the 2d recorded version, and the whole event fitted together much better, both in televisual terms, and the way the various sequences were presented.

* Edited to add that I agree with Bushmaster re Wimbledon and camera angles *

The placement of the 3D cameras was quite different from the 2D ones, which explains why the 3D commentary was completely separate from the 2D programme. It was quite obvious during the parade that the 3D cameras were way down the track, thus it was some 30 seconds or so after a team was announced before they appeared on the screen, and your remark about the TV commentary overlapping with the arena's. I recorded both the 2D and 3D versions and I think they complemented each other.

I watched it for about 15 minutes whilst streaming the 2D version on my laptop.

I found the 3D version disappointing so switched to BBC HD

I was away on holiday when it was on, so only had the option of 2D (only caught the last hour)

So I watched it in full in 3D when i got home. Next day, my parents came around and we watched the whole thing in 3D all over again.

Thoroughly enjoyed the whole thing ( apart from Macca ) and very impressed with the 3D.

I have a new question for everybody. I am not sure if I should start a new thread or not, but which TV set did you watch it with and were you satisfied? I will start off, I watched it with my LG LM670T in my basement and the 3d looked really good on it.

Watched it on my 50" Samsung active plasma. Overall, i thought it looked fantastic. (although there seemed to be 1 dodgy camera)

For me it is a Samsung UE40D6530 with active glasses, and, yeah I guess it was OK. 3D isn't this TVs strong point so I had to fiddle around with the settings to increase the depth. Certainly 3D adds that 'je ne sais quoi' and even though I don't get 100% smooth motion when there's action scenes or when they're panning, I can almost get it right with Motion Plus set to Clear.

I liked the end of the Closing Ceremony and when they did that animation thing after it finished, but don't think I'll be watching the Proms last night in 3D, or any Proms for that matter!

Yes. I did and really enjoyed it in 3D. The opening ceremony was more impressive in 3D, and other games as well. I should have recorded it, but didn't think it'd be this good. My tv is lg passive 3D btw.

Being new to 3D having bought an LG television from Curry's earlier this year I watched the opening ceremony as well as the 1'000 metres and closing ceremony in 3D.

I have to say I was blwon away and when the confetti came down in the opening and closing ceremonies it was like having paper flying about in my bedroom, there is ongoing debate regarding HD but an example I would give is if you are watching football and look at the colour of the grass and players kit in SD and then swap to HD and you will notice a difference.

It will be the same with 3D some will say it is not as good as people make out but when things jump out of the screen at you then it is trully amazing, even the cameras in some of the shots at the closing and opening ceremonies were coming out of the screen.

As for the price I bought mine for around £249 I think it was and that was full HD and around a 22inch television, I mean looking at prices in the Argos catalogues and while two years ago I would only have dreamed of owning a 3D televison prices are coming down.

I guess it is because with the glasses free sets which will be £1.000s in cost and probably remain so for quite some time

I watched it after it being recorded in 3D. I can't say it added anything. The placement of the cameras was not that good, as others have said. I think the problem is that they place them to try and make the most of the 3D effect rather than place them in the best position to view the event.
A bit like all the 3D films (Not one good one yet) which are made solely to promote the 3D scenes.

There you go....

On the 19th August at 17:35 the BBC HD Channel will be transmitting "Ulimate Killers".

This single programme has been made from the very successful Planet Dinosaur series.
