Exactly and I will back that up. I am falabale (for small, poor humans living on overdrafts, we make mistakes) and so the reminder function invaluable. I pay VM a lot of money to have a choice of what I record and what I don't record so therefore I wanted a reminder function.

Bit of a double whammy, really. Getting the update later does not bother me. Being left in limbo wondering which night the update is going to happen is really irritating.

As it happens, I got the update last night. Bit disappointed really. Thought I would be able to alter my recordings to default to 2 mins before and 10 mins after padding.

A total of 5 mins flexibility is next to useless. Means I will STILL have to alter each individual recording/series link if I want the increased padding. I wonder what wavelength Virgin was on when they did this?

No it isn't when most shows don't need padding.

Why do set each individual recording / series link to 10 mins after ? , that is waste of hard drive space in my opinion.

Because that's how I used to have it set up with Sky+ and it's what I am comfortable with. Seeing as I have the 1TB box and I wipe recordings when I finish with them I fail to see how it is a waste of HDD space.

We could go on having this conversation all evening.

The upshot is that TiVo is flexible and there is no right or wrong way of using it, but I would still have preferred the option to set my defaults globally how I want them set.

The key word there being 'most'.

I personally set my padding to a default of zero and add individual padding to a very few selected shows that may overrun.

But other people want to set padding differently, because it works for them.

People should have been given the option to set default padding in a way that suits them. For some reason VM/Tivo don't think the user base is competent enough to make intelligent choices with regards to all recording defaults, so have restricted the padding and the' Keep Until' options. I find that really insulting and annoying.

I don't think people should have a option to set too much padding as a default.

Total of 5 mins as a default is a enough.

Ah, so you also, along with VM/Tivo, don't think that people aren't competent enough to make their own choices. Good to know for reference.

I think the point here is that paddings main purpose is to allow for the few minutes that broadcasters seem unable to correctly schedule their programs.

Why can't ALL channels start and end their programs as scheduled?

There is absolutely no justifiable reason for BBC starting Eastenders at 7:28 when it is scheduled for 7:30.

Sometimes I have seen Eastenders start later than 7.30pm because of the News or other show/BBC adverts in front of it

TiVo update now complete!

http://my.virginmedia.com/customer-n...iVoUpdate.html

We’ve updated your TiVo box to enable these great new features…

Record and Remind

Record and Remind brings reminders to TiVo. And, if you do miss your reminder, you don't miss your show as TiVo will still record it for you.
Your reminder once it has been set will appear when you’re watching live TV, a recording or an On Demand video. Don’t worry if you miss it as you can find it in your recordings in My Shows.
You will also be able to update a planned recording to change it to be a reminder.

Faster access to on demand Movies, shows and Music Videos in Search

It is now possible to just search for On Demand programmes and Music videos, so you can quickly find the movie, show or song that you’re after.
If the programme you want cannot be found then you will be offered the opportunity to Search All TV with the same search text and then results for live TV programmes, actors and directors will appear.
You’ll also find that you’ll need less button presses to play any On demand programmes that you find in TiVo search.

Global settings

If you want to make sure all your recordings start 2 minutes early or keep 20 episodes of every series you can now change your global settings so that all recordings and series links you make pick up the new default recording options you want.
The new defaults will be applied to all recordings going forward but not recordings planned before you made the change.

Other Changes

The changes made to your TiVo box also include improvements to stability and improvements to HDMI connection reliability.

It's a pity that the default settings for recording didn't include the "Keep Until" choice. I like mine to always be set to "Until I delete" not the default "Until Space Needed". I have over 50% of my drive free yet programmes I recorded only a few days ago already have the egg timer displayed stating they will be deleted within 36 hours.

They won't deleted within 36 hours , the egg timer is badly worded.

Only if it needs to. It doesn't delete things unless it need the space. And it starts with suggestions.

Virgin should get rid of that message because it's wrong and it won't happen.

Since the update "My Planed Recordings" will barely show a weeks programs , before it would do 2 weeks (unless the EPG didn't go that far).

Is this a case of something that worked now doesn't due to the update?

"My Planned Recordings" still shows 2 weeks for me.

My point was that this option about how long to keep recordings should be in the default settings options. They had a chance to get rid of the 36 hours message for this update and haven't taken it. That's two things for update 15.4 then!
