One of my favourite songs (by one of my favourite artists, Leon Russell) is A Song For You. Check it out on Spotify. However, being a great song it was inevitable that people should cover it, and boy are there some crap cover versions.

Good ones, in my opinion, are those by Christine Aguilera with Herbie Hancock and - just - Donny Hathaway, and utterly crap ones - the same song remember - are by Whitney Houston (starts well, then dies when some idiot of a producer decided to add a ‘disco’ beat after about one and a half minutes) and worst of all, because it is so f*cking safe is a version by The Carpenters. And surprisingly Amy Winehouse has a version which I hate. And of course Simply Red just couldn't leave it alone and reduce it, like most everything they touch, to anodyne crap. And if you like Money's Too Tight Too Mention, listen to the version by The Valentine Brothers (who wrote it, check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Money%27s_Too_Tight_%28to_Mention%29) which shows up Mick Fake Soulboy Hucknall for the p*llock he is.

What other songs are there which you like but which have been completely destroyed by some other artists.
PS Another great song is Have I Told You Lately That I Love you by Van Morrison (who wrote it) which is, in my view utterly wrecked by some others.

Then there's Have I Told You Lately That I Love you by Van Morrison, who wrote it, and which is beautiful and then thevarious abortions by other artists, some of which are AWFUL

What about John Belushi covering Joe Cocker covering the Beatles? http://www.veoh.com/watch/v16039034KRFprghT?h1=John+Belushi+-+With+A+Little+Help+From+My+Friend

At least it's better than Wet Wet Wet's version.

Sweet Child O' Mine - one of the most ill treated songs in history! regularly defiled on X Factor.

Nobody has ever improved on the original or ever will, I wish they'd just leave it alone.
    What about GnR covering it?
You have Axl but no Slash and with VR you get Slash but with Myles Kennedy. I know it's just his voice and he's being himself but it does sounds like he's doing a bad impression of Axl :D

Just about every cover version of Beatles' songs, even if done by Joe Cocker.

Great singalong pop-rock songs covered by Gleeful ninnies.

I remember seeing Shirley Bassey singing Elenor Rigby, dressed like a chandelier in a brothel and singing with a huge grin on her face as she gyrated about. Totally missed the point of the song.

I think Myles Kennedy is a better singer than Axl. Have always thought Axl was overrated.

    "Mr Tamborine Man"

The Byrds version was miles better that the original Bob Dylan version imo.

So was Eric Clapton's version of "knocking on heavens door"

Celine Dion should be hung, drawn and quartered for her version of "You shook me all night long" by AC/DC,

among my favourite cover versions are "Hurt" by Johnny Cash (a Nine inch nails song)

and "Walk on by", by the Stranglers,

I rather like Whitesnake's version of Bobby Bland's classic Ain't No Love in the Heart of the City

Alien Ant Farm (was that their name?) wrecked Smooth Criminal, and what Kelly Osbourne did to Papa Don't Preach was outright vile.

What would she and her Banshees have sung if it wasn't for them?

And they also covered Helter Skelter. Siouxsie had good taste.

Anyone who ever sang any Bob Dylan song sang it better than he did
He wrote some ace songs, Mr Dylan, no question. But he can sing about as well as a dead dog.

It really was. I believe even Madonna herself has said as much.

I dont know what the description would be but there is a trend at the moment for songs sung by women, (both commercially and in adverts), a slow acoustic version, with a whiny voice, often acapella, it grates on me like nails down a blackboard, I think that singer started it with 'your song', awful
