Okay, I'm new to this Android Smartphone bit so I need some advice on an APP for power saving, there are so many battery saver apps so a few options will be welcome....Free Apps please if possible. Not that I'm tight with the money but I've just spent £4.99 on the A-Z app..

Not needed these days on any platform.
You can achieve the same results or better with minimal manual tweaking of settings.
You have to accept if you use your phone it is going to go flat, if you want it to last a bit longer put the screen brightness on auto (or 25%) and turn off WiFi and mobile data when not in use but in my experience so long at the screen isn't on it wont make much difference.
After a month of using it I'm so impressed I'm updating to the paid version.
Indeed. This is basically all these daft battery apps do anyway!
Clear running apps too when you're not using them. See if you can manage with screen brightness down a notch.
That depends on how you use your phone. I've recently tested many of the Android battery savers to try and get some more juice out of my phone - I already get good battery life through the normal recommended tweaks but wanted to see if i could improve it further.
I like to keep wifi on at all times when I'm home but it was draining a fair amount of battery. After trying lots of apps I've stuck with "2x Battery" which I've set to turn off wifi and data connections but wake them every 20 minutes in order for data to sync etc (this is when the screen is off, the connections stay on when the screen is on). This way I can easily get a days worth of use on one charge and I often lose only 50% of battery over 48 hours. This is on a Note 2 which has a large battery though.
A good test for how much your radios drain the battery is to compare the battery loss with wifi/data on and then again when the phone is on airplane mode.
The only app you will need is one that can monitor what apps are using what power, such as GSM Battery Monitor... you will get good advice from XDA Forums.
Surely it is app dependent? If android offers full multitasking, the os is in no position to decide to shut down/pause apps.
Best thing to do is take Apple's advice (if you can bring yourself to do it ). Charge whenever you can. Li-Ion batteries don't mind this. I have a charger in the Kitchen, sitting room and one beside my bed. A charger cable permenantly plugged into my PC for when I'm working and one in the car. You can use any USB mains charger. I've collected loads over the years and I have them plugged in all over the place. Went onto Amazon and orderd up a bunch of lightening cables at 3 quid a pop. Job done.
Oh and I also have an emergency short cable in my wallet. You're never far from a USB port most of the time.
But you then don't get push notifications so the vast majority of people won't want to do this.
Wifi/data off all the time would be pointless, I agree, which is why I've gone for a middle ground and set it to come on periodically (It can be as low as every 5 minutes). I have plenty of chargers around but I don't want to have to keep charging my phone more than once a day. My last phone was a One X and I hated the battery life and always worrying about it running out of juice, which would really go against the whole idea of having a smartphone..
I once used half my monthly data allowance when i was at home and decided to download a map for navfree before going on holiday.
After that i decided to do without power saving apps and just use the settings.
At also allows you to put it on vibrate when you've got something on your calendar, for example, or going on silent when you're at home, its 11pm and the phone is charging.
