Anyone that has rang up o2 to cancel...have you been told to return your router? The lady said they would be sending a pre-paid package for me to return the router and the plug? Had the router for over 2 years thought once you were out of contract the router was yours?Told me if it wasn't returned within 30 days of cancelling id be charged £20!
I was with BE for about 4 years, and I was expected to return the router. No pre-paid envelope was provided but the parcel the router originally came in (or one you'll have to provide yourself at your own cost) can be sent back to a freepost address with a certificate of postage scanned and emailed to them or you'll be charged around £35 for the router.
Greedy Sky admits: We crippled broadband with TOO MANY users
Sky has confessed it has overloaded its broadband service by putting far too many Brits onto its network. The media giant told The Register that it has run out of capacity in certain corners of the UK, which has knackered its users' internet connectivity at peak times.
Ok dont want to hijack the thread off topic. Ive been hunting and apparently o2s open zones are free for anyone no matter what network you're on. Maybe another reason they lose money.

I'm in a bit of a tricky situation. Unlike everyone that has left Be in the last two days, there is no fibre or even cable in my area, which means I am stuck with 3.5mb ADSL. I'm with Be because they let you squeeze as much performance as possible out of the line and their tech support is pretty knowledgeable. I also have my landline with Be. This is £25/month.
I suppose I'll try the switch to Sky as long as I won't have to enter a contract, the price doesn't go up or the speed/latency is worse. Failing that I'll give Xilo a try.

I think it's standard procedure to return the router. It's useless for anything other the O2 anyway. My O2 router is still in the box it came in as I've been using my own one for years.
If I want to pay up my contact do I need a MAC code if I want to mode from ADSL2 to Fibre?
Could I just cancel with O2 or should I be asking for a MAC code?
Does anyone know if PlusNet will let you take their ADSL offering and them upgrade to fibre when it comes available? I think in our area we are just a few months away from going live.

That was my understanding of it too, I've never been asked for one back. I'm on my 3rd ISP supplied router at the moment.

Might be different with O2.
When I quit O2 (for Sky), they wanted the router back (pile of junk that was never used since day one anyway, I used a netgear instead)

My ISP wanted a MAC when going from ADSL to FTTC (and changing ISPs simultaneously). It's still a migration.
As for upgrading if it gives Plusnet more money I can't see why they'd say no to you upgrading. Best to ask them directly though.

Yes, they said they're sending me a pre-paid envelope too. Rather than go for Plusnet's own mystery router I decided to buy a Belkin N600 instead. As I live in a flat the 2.4GHz spectrum is pretty crowded around me, with 16 other Wi-fi networks visible, so as all my equipment supports 5GHz I thought I might as well pay a bit more and move myself out of the congestion zone.

Have you found out what the Plusnet settings are that you will need to put into youre router?
Also will Plusnet support any faults you may get (if any) as its not there router?
I Know O2 could be a bit iffy with help if you didnt have there router plugged in when asking for help.

The Plusnet ordering page states that you can use your own router if you prefer, and the Amazon page for the N600 describes the router as being suitable for a BT line with ADSL or ADSL 2+.

Those are pretty standard settings for UK ADSL, which bearing in mind Plusnet is on BT Wholesale isn't surprising. Thanks for the link though. Always better to confirm and all.
My gran's Plusnet router is identical to the O2 Wireless Box II, if that's any help to anyone .... Managed to burn my O2 Wireless Box II out last year....
If you 'mate' does not get at least 15mb/s they won't connect him to FTTC. I was getting a steady 15mb/s which more than doubled jumping to FTTC and again when I took out another package giving me 70mb/s on these "antiquated, decades old, copper telephone" from the cabinet to your house? lol and great ping times.
What do you call great ping times? Like for me a ping is not a big problem as i don't play games, but for my mate it is and he have pretty good ping times with C&W. I think he will stay as he is as long as it is working, he thinks that maybe it is best not to try and fix something that is not broken and chatting to some people in the gaming community and finding out some of them have had problems since going FTTC, he may be better staying as he is. He done a check and it says he should get about 58 on FTTc, which is more than what I would get.
I am staying as I am, i am happy with the service I am getting.
I found out today that PlusNet is actually owned by BT and has been since 2007 it is run independently but owned by them nonetheless.
Oh yes, Plusnet took over Metronet and it was not that long after that when Bt took over Plusnet.
Traffic management is not great on it, seem like they can't cope with high traffic.
If you got for Plusnet, for goodness sake don't use their router, get a decent one.
TBH, I would not touch plusnet with a bargepole, when they took over Metronet i left almost right away, I wanted nothing to do with plusnet then and I don't want any thing to do with them now.
Even less now since bloated toad owns them

O2 wifi is part of your mobile contract, nothing to do with BE or any broadband connection.
I'm probably going to go with Plusnet.
I have access to O2 wifi, and only use O2 for mobile.
it's bolt-on that gets added to your account.
it may be a perk included in O2 broadband, but it's certainly part of O2 mobile.
It's not the UK branch that's lost money

O2 have to finish off this network core they are building first.
Then sky and O2 have to integrate systems. As they can't force a sky line on people sounds like this will make it more of a challenge for them.
Will all customers move at once or will most logically they move us over when the contracts end?
What happens to the DD that is setup with O2 at the moment? Will sky require a new one? If so then that will leave the door open for many to leave.

Support isn't an issue.
Nice one.
