EE: Whitney TA Post

I do have to laugh the way in all the soaps these people just walk into jobs. So Whitney gets the TA post which lots of people would have applied for. The stringent selection procedures that take place for the teaching profession especially around safeguarding and she just happens to get the job. Then there's the level 3 qualification you're meant to have. CRB/DBS Checks all around her background - this is just bullshit. It was the same when Mas just walked into it.

and walked back out again

It really annoys me when that happens in soaps.

True took me two years and shit loads of training at work placements, course work and assessments to get a level 3 in childcare, although you can still get the job with a level 2, I guess at least they showing her progressing, quite a big deal for a soap character :D

Whitney needs more training. She has decided that Dennis is a troublemaker and neglected to question why he's acting out. She arrogantly told a parent that her child is poisonous while said child was in the room. It is alarming that Ava is condoning her actions rather than teaching her to check her ego and look for reasons for consistent misbehaviour.

It has been a while since we've had the whole 'Whitney gets boyfriend, cheats on him, audience are supposed to feel sorry for Whitney' storyline, surely it is due?

Whilst I have never been the biggest Whitney fan she has been studying for her NVQ Level 3 for a quite a while, I remember there being a story about that a while ago, Also it seems that because she knew Ava and had worked with her at the after school club that also helped her in getting the TA job, obviously these days its all about who you know rather than what you know so its not completely unrealistic. At least it seems they are gonna be showing Whitney at work, which is more than we get with Ava.

Whitney shouldn't be working on that job, she needs sacked from it and put on the market.

I am not too bothered about Whitney's direction, its been a slow burn with her training up and my impression is she gets some sort of support in the sense that she had a troubled past so has had placements lined up for her and people helping her out.

What is very odd is Lauren's college, one minute she is totally done with it and failed and dropped out, working in Beauty, then that goes belly up and she suddenly has a 'project' to work on for college? o.o

Abi's endless exams and 'biology practicals' are dumb too.

Whitney is young and full of her own importance. She does seem to love children and she could have potential once she gets her ego under control and learns not to take it personally when a child challenges her. Unfortunately she's not getting the proper guidance from Ava. Ava is the one who needs sacking. There are many reasons children Dennis' age act out which require intervention: abuse or neglect, anger, stress, learning difficulties, poor socialisation skills, psychiatric disorders etc. Instead of trying to find the reason for Dennis' behaviour so he can get the appropriate support she has written him off because she doesn't like him or his mother. Ava is a negligent teacher and should not be working with children.

in whitneys defence, she ahs been doing some sort of nvq or whatever when working in that playscheme thingy, also she obviously already has a crb check i think it is quite realistic, and ok ava has probably put a good word in for her, but its not nepetism ava is impressd with whitneys work doing the after schools stuff

I agree, we didn't even see Mas study for any qualifications that would even get him a Classroom Assistant job, let alone a TA! He just walked into it and then threw it in and went back to being a Postie!

Have we actually seen Whitney working towards hers? I know she worked in the community centre (and she could use that to go in at entry level), but to get the qualifications to be a TA she would have had to go to College for at least 3 years to obtain the level 3 (1 year for level 2 and 2 years for the level 3 diploma),

Training means bollock all when applying got TA jobs. Unless you either have a child at the school, or know one of the teachers you ain't got a cat in hells chance of getting in there.

Speaking from personal experience, here schools are very cliquey envorioments and it' not what you know it's who know.

I can vouch for that. I sort of just walked into my job because I knew several members of staff. BUT to be fair, it was a temporary (a year and a half) basis, which I am now to be interviewed for, to do the job permanently. If I were to get the permanent post, then I would have to go for the qualification. But it is just my personal experience.

Also, from my experience, its not just TAs who get a job based more on who you know. The deputy head on our school got the job more through who she knew. But this is just my experience of the school environment in general.

And it's this type of attitude which has resulted in the acceptable misbehavior that now exists in all our schools.

Yes I agree with your post in that it's who you know - certainly is realistic to my own experience. However, it would have been good to show her NOT getting the job when Ava wasn't present at the interview. I found her announcing "I got the job" all quite unrealistic within the context they presented us with. It would have been better, imo, for her to have been unsuccessful and carried on applying

Thanks for your honesty. I am a fully qualified teacher having put myself through education as a mature student from the age of 21 to now 42. I find it really difficult to get a break because of not knowing anybody. When I have got jobs, I'm afraid if you're good these days, it's not wanted because some managers feel threatened. The last school I supplied cover for told me that 3 of their TA's had got their jobs through knowing somebody at the school; one told me "I haven't got no qualifications at all" all very sad now and it defeats the object of schools providing education in the first place :)

Its ridiculous, she does a work placement at the community centre, does a child care course and apparently now she's a TA without any training or qualifications.
Mas just walked in and out of his post.

When Sadie introduced new beauty treatments to the Salon, Poppy went around practicing on her friends, aren't their exams etc (levels) you have to do before you can do treatments on people.

Also agree with the fm who mentioned Abi, she was still revising for her exams during the summer.

Hi Priscilla, yeah but I suppose they are, thinking about it, going by what happens now in the real world. I just know having been through the process myself that it's so strict the selection criteria that I find this s/l patronising.
