i have just been given half of a ten pund note - the bit with the queens head on and the number down the side, can i use it or will i have to take it to the bank and if i do what will they say?
You need to send it to the Bank of England / Royal Mint. They'll send you a cheque for it which will take a couple of weeks. I think if you pop into your local bank they'll give you the form.
I did it when I found £40 in ripped up tenners in a bin whilst chambermaiding. Nice tip.
The Bank of England’s Mutilated Note service exists to reimburse members of the public with the face value of any damaged, mutilated or contaminated Bank of England notes, providing there are sufficient fragments or remains. As a general rule there should be evidence of at least half a note. The Bank currently receives around 35,000 individual applications per year, totaling around £40 million. Despite the high volumes the majority of claims are assessed within a few days.
I'm assuming that it is a Bank of England note that we're talking about and not, say, a Scottish or North Ireland note.
like i said 'he is the bosses son' i could feel a p45 moment coming on if i did that.
No you couldn't!!
Assuming this is not a joke, you have the right to be paid in legal tender! Half a tenner ain't legal tender. He is breaking the law simple as that, trying to fob you off so he doesn't have to deal with a damaged note.
If he sacked you, you could bounce his ass into a tribunal so quickly.. and trust me the compensation would be more than a tenner

It's worth a fiver. And remember - if they give you any hassle in the shop, just look at them sternly and say in a Scottish accent "I think you'll find that's legal tender."
My comment was directed at the question "Can I use it?" I feel it's pretty obvious that no merchant with a full set of marbles would accept half a ten pound note as payment and that's why I made that comment.
I accept, however, that there was a second question in the OP about going to a bank. My comment was not directed at that portion of the enquiry, but apologies for any confusion.
OP, I agree with those who said you shouldn't have accepted it, even if it was from the bosses son. Was it payment for something of yours? Were you giving him change? What were the circumstances?

Bosses son not as evil as i am making out here. the tenpound (half of) is his own and i think he thought he would off load the problem on to me and i would give him a ten pound note out of the petty cash. i didnt.

So was it your tenner from your wallet that you gave him?
Or was it from the till of where you work?
If the latter, it's your bosses problem, not yours. If the former, you were a bit silly to accept it.

it is his ten pund note. i have now been to the bank, as i do on a daily basis. they just looked at me and said that they wont/carnt do anything with it. Ten pund note now back on bosses sons desk.

Oh well, it's not your problem then. Don't worry about it.

Give it back to him and ask for a proper one.
Was he the one who ripped it??
I'm sure there is some archaic law or other that classes that as treason
Threaten to dob him in
