What would you do if you were in a shop with a friend or family member and you noticed them casually slip an item into their bag or pocket without paying for it?

    Confront them later about it.

Probably say something along the lines of 'errr...what the **** are you doing? Either put that back on the shelf or back in your basket and pay for it, or you'll be walking out of here on your own, you muppet.'

I've seen someone, who was not a family member, slip a bottle of shampoo into their pocket in a chemist and walk out. I didn't do anything, but I was very young.

If I actually noticed them casually slip an item into their bag or pocket without paying for it, I'd tell them to casually slip it back on the shelf and warn them not to try it again as it is (a) a crime, and (b) they are obviously rubbish at shoplifting.

Would anyone change their answer if it was their mother that they'd noticed doing it?

I would do nothing. I would definitely not tell the police/store. Maybe ask when we got home if they were having money troubles or something.

Only time I would directly get involved would be if it was one of my kids doing it.

Well seeing as she's been dead quite a few years, yes, my reaction would definitely be different :D

I'd ask them what the f*** they were doing stealing things when I was with them - to drop me in the shit as well as them.

Then when I'd calmed down I'd ask them if they were short of money and needed a sub.

I would just let them do what they are doing.

Probably wouldn't care. Haven't got time to be a social worker.

Walk away and say something later. I don't wan't a criminal record and don't wan't to be responsible for giving a friend a criminal record. I wouldn't go shopping with them again though and I would tell tem rxeactly why. Stranger wise there is no grey area and if I could quietly report them I will

Pass them a £10 of my money.

Tell them to put it into the basket & the tenner will pay for it.

    Shame on them for stealing,

I probably wouldn't want to cause a fuss in the shop, but would make it clear later that I wasn't happy about it, and I wouldn't go shopping with them again.
