'Shire' - do you say 'shuh' or 'sheer'?

Watching old episode of Millionnaire earlier and noticed Chris Tarrant introducing some contestants eg Wendy from Wiltsheer and Darren from Hertfordsheer....

I would have pronounced those Wiltshuh and Hertfordshuh.

How do you say it?

I probably use both. I'm a bit renegade like that.

Shuh personally, but that's just my northern dialect.

    I live in Wiltsheer :)

I would presume that someone from up North would say Shuh, Audrey from Corrie would!

    Sky blue-pink with a finny-anny border.

Same as you. But West Country people would say Wiltshurr. Lots of different accents in the UK!

I tend to say 'sher', with a hard 'er' sound, as in Gloucester-sher, Hertford-sher. It's probably a West Country thing.

"Sheh" unless it's Englandshire, then it's actually "shire" rather than "sheer"

shire, as in shire horse. Denbighsheer or Denbighshuh just sounds wrong.

In Welsh I'd say seer for the northern counties (I work for sir y Fflint) but would automatically say sheer for sheer Benfro. I wonder if that's just because I've heard locals pronounce it that way and I automatically copy them?

When my Canadian relatives came over they pronounced it as written and said Carmarthen-shyer

Yeah that's a Welsh language thing. Seer in the north and sheer in the south.
I doubt we'll have any anyway after the pre-1996 counties are reinstated. We'll be back to Dyfed and Clwyd etc.

I watched that again last night!

Even now I always expect Sean Bean to respond by asking "Where the hell's Hear-ford?" :D

In answer to the OP's question, I tend to say "-shuh" ... with one or two exceptions.

I'm from Nottinghamshire, I pronounce shire as in the horse.
