It has to be You'll Never Walk Alone....not cos of the football..but because of what the song means to people esp in Liverpool....never fails to make me,and many others cry!
Although it is V cheesy - Ronan Keating - If tomorrow never comes. I like his version better then the original.
Holding back the years - Simply Red. Especially when I watch the episode of OFAH where Rodney gets married & Del has been beat up. Del is left on his own in the reception hall as this song is playing.
One of the last times I saw my friends dad alive ( He had cancer), we were watching celebrity stars in their eyes (again ) and the girl who played Chloe in Emmerdale sang 'Time to say goodbye'. We all sat there & wept quietly as we knew nothing could be done for him. Still chokes me when I hear it now.
Hear you Me - Jimmy Eat World
Hurt - Nine Inch Nails (and Johnny Cash)
Unintended - Muse
Drugs Don't Work - Verve
Will you - Hazel O'Connor
Dear God - XTC
Wake me up when September Ends - Green Day
Hallelujah - Jeff Buckley (much more moving than Rufus IMO)
How to save a Life - The Fray
and I am sure many more I will think of later
There are many...but the first that comes to mind for me would be The Cranberries "No Need To Argue".
Id always thought this was a very sad song...but i saw a film a few years ago and this song was played at the end at a very emotional and tragic part of the film which made it even more sad
In Shrek, it doesn't sound like Rufus's version that was used. The voice sounds totally different. Any idea who's version was actually used?
EDIT - Never mind, after some searching, I found that it was actually John Cale who performed it in the film, but Rufus' version was put on the soundtrack.
'Wish You Were Here' (Pink Floyd) gets me, as does 'Song to the Siren' by Tim Buckley. I also shed a tear to 'New Dawn Fades' by Joy Division, and 'Crowds' by Bauhaus, and about a million other songs...
Also, a third rate cover by someone called Maxwell, who really should consider giving up the day job based on this effort. The Maxwell cover seems to be getting a fair bit of airplay in US dramas, God knows why... the original is 100 times better. The blokes got a truly annoying voice - could probably shatter glass.
Drugs Don't Work always makes me cry ever since somebody told me it was about Richard Ashcroft's father. Actually, I think lots of Ashcroft's songs have a very beautiful and melancholic quality.
Karen Carpenter's is the most sad-sounding vocal I've ever heard - even when she's singing quite cheesy songs.
I'd also nominate Hurt by Johnny Cash.

Very moving song!
Also Damien Rice and 'Cold Water'.......very moving.
the best cover of this song by far, such raw, powerful emotion.

Not really the best video for this track but it's the song that counts... probably good for a funeral.
Id always thought this was a very sad song...but i saw a film a few years ago and this song was played at the end at a very emotional and tragic part of the film which made it even more sad
And Muse - Muscle Museum makes me cry.

And Also "My Immortal" - Evanescence
Nine Inch Nails - Hurt
xx
Manic Street Preachers..The Everlasting
Whitney Houston..I Have nothing

and the cover versions are sad too
She's Gone - Hall and Oates
(also done by Tavares)
I compiled a list of sad songs when Diana Spencer died, they played a fair few on the radio at that time.
This may seem like a cheesy choice, but two of the writers of this song commited suicide.
Makes it a lot more meaningful and poignant.
