Isn't it a bit too large to make phone calls on, though?

Nope. It's not much bigger than quite a few phones currently on the market; for example:
Nokia N95: Length: 99 mm, Width: 53 mm, Thickness: 21 mm
HTC Dual: Length: 107 mm, Width: 55 mm, Thickness: 15.8 mm
