Generic touch-screen security flaw...

I've had a "smartphone" with touch screen for just 3 days now, and already there are 4 "clean" patches on the screen that are clearly visible and perfectly aligned above the virtual numeric keypad showing a potential thief exactly which 4 digits make up my security code, leaving them with only 24 combinations to try.

The lockscreen on any phone isn't going to keep a would-be thief out of it I promise you.

It's designed to stop people messing about with it when you're not looking i.e. reading your messages.

And not all touchscreen phones use the numeric keypad to unlock. Some ask you to draw a figure on the screen in a specific way.
Incidentally, this 'flaw' can apply to any keypad. Its easily cured by not letting the screen/keys get dirty.

Just change your password to some of the unused digits :)
