mobile phone in a power cut

yesterday during a long power cut i tried to text my daughter but couldnt send, phone display said "limited service" and an icon showed up of a phone handset crossed out.... i couldnt makecalls. Once the power was back on the phone was back to normal again. yes I had plenty of credit on phone. Why would this happen?.. sorry not very tech minded :rolleyes:

Power-cut to the mast? Not sure if they have a backup supply... this could have failed... or perhaps just coincidence?

Some base station will have power back ups. However, the UK having a very stable supply the operators clearly believe it is an unnecessary expense!
