I'm looking for a quiet branded psu.
Only need about 400w. Only have £30.
Open to any recommendations. Top priority is noise level.

It's coming in at £32 with a discount code at Maplin, or about £33 from Dabs with there bank holiday 10% off deal.
I think the XFX's are made by Seasonic. I will go for one of these if I don't find something better by tonight.
The XFX one mentioned comes with a 5 year warranty.
As long as it doesn't scream at me like the oem psu s I've had then I can live with that.
I like Corsair products too. My current PSU is a Corsair HX 520 which I've had 6 years.
You have to look beneath the branding though.
For example, the one you link to Corsair get CW to manufacturer their CX models.

XFX are actually rebranded Seasonic made.

Seasonic have one of the best reputations for PSUs. The XFX comes with a 5 year warranty. The Corsair , 3 years.
If I had to pick between the two I think I'd go for the XFX.
Seasonic made the Corsair HX 520 I have.
So are Seasonic, So if its true that XFX are rebranded seasonics......
Interesting and My Corsair is made by Seasonic as well (CMPSU-400CX).
I've only just read that.
Sorry but thats bollocks. The quality of the product is because of who makes it. Why even bother asking for advice if your just going to ignore it?
If you read the thread you'd see that was my entire point lol.
Lion8Tiger said "A little bit more expensive but a good make" and provided a link to a Corsair CX 430.
I am not disputing the quality of some Corsair products. What I said was Corsair themselves don't actually manufacture that particular model. The CX series is outsourced to Channel Well.
Try not to get your knickers in a twist though buddy since you're actually agreeing with what I said
I have a BeQuiet PSU and unless I put my ear against it I can't hear it at all. Not sure if you could pick one of these up for £30 though. In the past I have had so-called "silent" PSUs that have been nowhere near as good.
Thanks, they will be out of my budget for what I have in mind.
I agree 'quiet' is subjective though I had to try describe what I needed somehow.
I've also noticed they can use the word 'silent' in marketing as I've seen a few power supplies that claim to be silent. I purchased one and it was the loudest psu I own.
For my purposes I can define 'quiet' to be one where the fan speed is regulated by temperature. They tend to be very quiet under normal loads.

£40 is about all I can raise at the moment.
Found this

£40 for a used CX500 in perfect working order, I'd say grab it.
Cheers, have added it to my watch list
Agree with that. i used to years ago when we had 233 and 500Mhz chips, even with 1Ghz, but not these day I would not.
Coolermasters are pretty good, not got one myself, but built a computer a couple of years back for someone and I got a coolermaster case and PSU for it. Pretty quiet as well
have a look at this one
Apart from that i can only go with what other people have said, Corsair. I got a Thermaltake myself, but they are not cheap.
Not sure if I would trust them to be honest. i built a machine to a budget for a friend a around three years back and got a CIT PSU, about 12 months after it went pop, thankfully the computer is fine apart from the power LED is not working, i will get another one when I go down past Maplin
I missed out on another Corsair HX 520 off eBay. It went for £33.50. I bowed out at that stage as I figured I could get something new at or near that price.
I've got a few more on the watch list so I'll see how things go.
I still have a CIT PSU. I used it for 20 minutes before replacing it. They are one of the companies that use the word 'silent' in some of their marketing. In reality it is the noisiest PSU I have ever owned. The fan seemed to one fixed speed.
For that build I ended up with an Antec Earthwatts 380 which was on sale for £30 at PC World at the time. The 380 has a small fan compared to most as most psus come with 120mm+ fans these days but its really quiet considering.
Zalman 450w quiet fan for £31.74
Coolermaster 500w quiet fan for £32.38
Enermax 350w quiet fan for £32.82
