Awful sound effects in The Sea Devils

Why were the sound effects in The Sea Devils so bloody awful? I had to skip many parts because the sound was so unbelievably high pitched that my ears couldn't bear the screeching. Don't even get me started on the music...
I don't really notice the sound in any other episode. This must of been quite a low point as far as production goes. Were high frequencies "cool" in those days?

Online, it could be because I'm watching the original recording, before it was put on DVD.
Now it could be argued that trying such an avant garde soundtrack on what is ostensibly a very down to earth story was a strange decision. Perhaps it wouldn't be seen as so very odd if these synth burblings had been used on, say, The Mutants?
