Moroccan Dirham - please help!

Hi, does anyone know anything about the currency restrictions on Moroccan Dirham?

I just rang a local exchange company and they said there's a 1,000 Dirham limit on the amount that can legally be taken into the country, but when I've looked on the FCO website it sounds like there are only restrictions on exported cash?

Any advice would be welcome! Thanks. :)

We went to Marrakech a few years ago and we were told by the bank that you cannot take Dirham into the country with you and bring it back - you have to change it when you get to Morocco (probably at the airport ) and change it back when you leave.

Morrocans are more than happy to take £ or $ anyway

We went to Morrocco with sterling and changed it over there. You have to change it back before you leave though, so make sure you only have high denomination notes left, because the bank won't change the smaller ones.

Yes, as the above poster, the dirham is a closed currency so you can only get it in Morocco. When we went last November we paid in sterling and euros, as they will accept these or US dollars. However, they do prefer to take notes rather than coins so whatever currency you take try to get as many notes as you can!

1-Use an ATM when you get there

2- You will get a much better rate changing your money in Morocco rather than here. If you do buy Dirhams in the UK you are just throwing away money.
