Nick is getting a lot better at the hosting. Far more relaxed, as predicted by many on this thread.
I have always liked Nick and from the outset I was prepared to give him time to settle in because it must be a difficult job stepping into a presenting job, which as far as I know, is completely new to him and obviously because of filming a whole week in one day, it has appeared to have taken 'longer' before Nick has looked completely at ease, whereas had he been on a one show a day programme, it would have been sooner!
i wonder why women dont seem to do as well on countdown as the guys.I know there have been female champions but they are far outnumbered by the boys, particularly those in their late teens or early twenties.I suspect this series champion will be another from that demographic.

Kath, I think the reason is that some of the male contestants who get far in the game and seem to possess an almost photographic memory for numbers and obscure words may fall on the autistic spectrum, which affects males more. Some think it's unfair to pitch these almost encyclopaedic brains against regular contestants, but personally I think why not? A chance to shine, rather than be judged negatively!

That's nice isn't it, the men only do well because they're a bit special.
Probably explains why men have been pretty much responsible for every worthwhile invention throughout history.
It's a tricky subject - the male and female brains are very different, both have strengths and weaknesses. It's hard to go into it in much depth without potentially offending one or the other.
Putting exceptions to one side, there is a belief that generally speaking the male brain has a greater capacity for focused bursts of mental grinding (and instantly recalling information), but the female brain can handle multiple threads of thought with more efficiency.
Whether any of that is true I have no idea, I'm no expert, but I guess it's a vague possibility as to why men often seem to do better on Countdown. If there were another quiz show that concentrated more on the latter, I wonder if female winners would be more prevalent?

Interesting posts and speculation. On the other side of the coin Carol and Rachel, and Susie as well, are unusual in being women in a 'man's' role, traditionally for television that is.
ETA Perhaps a female presenter next? Although as I've mentioned before, with time Nick has grown on some of us.
So, who would you like to see as a female presenter? Must admit I am struggling there. Sandi Toksvig?
Yes, she's an idea and did occur to me too but I might get tired of her after a while. She's a bit like Clive Anderson in some ways.
Perhaps a series of different presenters but then there's the time it takes to settle in to what can't be an easy job.
It's easier to say who I wouldn't want! Apart from Susie the recent contestant I will have to get back to you on that one. Meanwhile, Nick is doing all right for now.

Next is Peter Lee vs. Victoria James

Contrast that with recent shows, where more often than not she's dressing like Emily Bishop. Time to replace?
I blame her fiancé - best replace him!
Good point. Although I think I read he's a millionaire so probably not very likely
Money isn't everything.
Tell her that, not me!

Females presenting, doing the sums and in charge of the dictionary? All sounds a bit 'Loose Women'
Quite. How about Sherrie Hewson for the sums? Lorraine Chase for the dictionary.
