I am surprised Liverpool supported Green would support a former Everton player now at Man U actually - he's usually one of the biggest critics.
As I say we've got all these players getting 100 caps but actually when its come to the major tournaments they've not delivered.
Alan Green may have been mildly critical of Rooney but he knows he has to play the BBC line and pretend he's a great player. Henry Winter of the Telegraph is often on Five Live and his worshipping of Rooney I actually find quite disturbing. Not just his football , but all aspects of his life.
The problem with Rooney has always been the media hype that surrounded him. Amongst my friends, I have always argued that he is overrated, not the New Messiah, nor should he be the linchpin of the team. In my opinion though, he is a good player and deserves a place in the England team, and is one of the better players in the team. There was a period, many years ago (I would guess Spring 2005) where for half the season he was the best player in the premier league and that was in a team with Ronaldo. Other than that, he has only ever been a good player.
There does not seem to be space in the media landscape to talk about Rooney in "normal" terms. He is either the worlds best, or should be side-lined. For years and years he was always over-discussed and always put forward as our one and only hope. Now there are more dissenting voices, but at least the media do seem to have moved on from "best player in the world" mode.
To be honest though, you can't blame 5-live. The whole media landscape, especially when discussing football, is to talk in such hyperbole, as to be dishonest. There doesn't seem to be a rational view of any football result. A win on a single day is just that, and any team can beat any other. But to the media, it is always a "are they going to win the league" and/or "crisis" and "should the manager go?".
There are too many hours to fill, and not enough football to listen to live, so we all have to "discuss" the results and the implications, and that has to be significant, hence the hyperbole.
Bring back the distance and objectivity. That goes for Rooney, and all football discussion.
They are now saying that he is very good with the youngsters, asking them if they have any problems etc. He's the captain , do they expect him to ignore the rest of the team. Chris Waddle dared to say that that he had underperformed in major tournaments, but was quickly shouted down by Alan Green. England have not won an important football match since 2004.
An even more startling statistic is that since 1966 England have only beaten one major footballing country in a knockout game in a tournament (Euros or WC). And that was Spain in 1996 on penalties. Almost 50 years and not beaten France, Germany, Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Brazil or Argentina in 90 (or 120) mins in a knockout game.

Yep! It's endless...there are hours to fill so rather than filling with football hyperbole simply discuss other sports instead of constantly hyping up soccer and so called "characters"
I never understand the fuss over matches that are "friendly" they appear to be just money making exercises for the FA...
I don't follow any football as such but I believe that even fan numbers are down for these sort of games as people have wised up....
They are on to it at the moment. Rachel is saying " We don't want to make too much of it , but". And they are not allowed to say what was actually sung in case it offends ( I know they can't repeat swear words , but they could give a better idea of the words)
I also noted that Campbell and Burden both seemed turned on talking about male dogs mounting each other. funny as Campbell is normally obsessed with political correctness.
Looks like we're going to have a few days of the BBC being desperate to be offended by some chants from England supporters.
I listened to Campbell's phone in about the England fans chants at Celtic Park, and you are right the PC BBC types did decide to get all upset over nothing.
The journalist guest was from the Guardian, naturally.
You know how many of Scottish fans who were actually at the match made a complaint ?
Not one.
More sanctimonious PC rubbish on 5 live sport this evening, instructed by their lefty friends at The Guardian. Trying to phone everyone they can think of to get backing, instead of trying to speak to the person who they are accusing.
They've been on PC crap all day, from Your Call onwards
I think Dave Whelan's comments were stupid, but it hardly justifies the wall to wall coverage 5live are giving it. They don't seem to interested when an MP, Diane Abbott, makes her regular racist remarks.

I quite agree, but in the wider scheme of things, the comments don't seem as over the top as some others. They've gone back to Malky McKay earlier and said the FA are still investigating and haven't promised Wigan anything. How long does it take them to get their act together when McKay admitted what he had texted and apologised, almost as soon as the story first came out.

too right ....
The BBC is being typically selective to suit their traditional agenda
Well I had to laugh the other evening when Phil Williams was talking to someone down the phone about how women are portrayed sometimes and the caller said that she'd been called a 'fat Asian c*nt'. It seemed to take Phil or his producers a moment or two to click what she'd said on the phone before he then apologised for any offence caused and stopped the interview.
He then apologised again once or twice. I missed the swearing myself as It was difficult to make out the callers accent - probably what took the 5live studio a moment or two to figure out too. Luckily I was listening via the tune-in app on my tablet so managed to rewind the stream and listen again.
What exactly is the point of having callers phone Question Time extra on 5live ?
All Nolan does is constantly interrupt and talk over them to the extent that the listener is not even allowed to hear the point they trying to make.If anyone dares say anything mildly non pc or controversial he is in there straight away with his big gob just insulting every ones intelligence and putting an end to any kind of debate.

That will be why this story is all over the back pages of those well known Socialist rags the Dailies Mail, Telegraph and Express then. Clearly some of you haven't done your homework.
The mere fact that a story appears in the Guardian does not automatically invalidate it. What started this particular hare running was a query by David Conn to Dave Whelan about his claim that senior people at the FA had told him no action was likely to be taken against Malky MacKay. This seems to me to be a legitimate piece of Journalism quite rightly followed up by others not only the BBC.

Just contrast last week's JP solo show with this week's....last week measured concise broadcasting with intelligent discourse, room for callers to speak, challenged without bluster by JP...my heart sank when I heard Nolans voice when I switched on.. .thought might have another week's respite...
The PC lefties on the sports programme tonight, were organised in putting the boot in to Dave Whelan. Every one of them were going over the top to keep the story going far more than it justified. They virtually called the Wigan captain, Emerson Boyce a liar, because he had written an article in the local paper, apparently in non-committal terms, but had not criticised Whelan and MacKay.
They then wheeled the expert Clark Carlisle in to keep it going.
They didn't have their boss, Mr Conn (very apt name), from the Guardian on tonight, but no doubt they had already had their update from him earlier. They even had the other well respected journalist Owen Jones on earlier on giving his expert views on another subject. Apparently he is now with The Guardian., must have moved on from the other lefty rag, The Indepedent (unless they have gone bust as expected by many in the media).

5live at its sanctimonious, offended by everything worst.
Yes so why shouldn't the IRA to be told to go forth and multiply at Celtic Park?
And Rachel has already mentioned her husband and children
You got it wrong didn't you?
