The BBC is responsible for many depressing and uninspiring programmes.
The are infested with negativity.
It is widely seen as representative of no one except a smug and self important London media elite.
But worse than this is a stream of scandals which proves it is a badly run and wasteful organisation. Shameful.

They have their good and bad points.

I think they (or rather any show producers and controllers at the time) have questions to answer over Savile if allegations of abuse in dressing rooms is ever confirmed but (unfortunately) it might be so far in the past and such a tangled web that it might be impossible to critique the situation accurately. I'd be surprised if that kind of thing did happen if there wasn't some negligence on someone's part but I guess that's an ongoing concern that will take years to resolve.

Funding is an issue for me. Their position as national broadcaster is a concern (seems like a major competitive advantage in a marketplace).

In general, I think they make better shows than ITV (e.g.) but that's a purely subjective view. One person will like BBC2, one person will like C4 or C5. That proves nothing other than what our individual tastes are.

    well in that case...

the British police are a national disgrace
    Parliament is a national disgrace
the Armed Forces are a national disgrace,
the NHS is a national disgrace,

    blah, blah, blah.

All big organisations get into these situations. The BBC has enriched my life a thousand times more than at least two of the above organisations. Who else is sick of this neverending Tory inspired bitch fest about the BBC? It's truly pathetic.

    Indeed.

Another yawn-inducing anti-BBC rant from a poster with an agenda, picking up incidents and issues spanning many years (and issues that have been widely discussed on DS previously)

I bleieve that one of the reasons for the the move to Salford was to help erode the overly London-centric aspect of the BBC - has it been successful in this regard?

For every anti-BBC thread that appears on DS, the ghost of Lord Reith kills a kitten. A kitten who paid its licence fee, starving the BBC of yet another £145 prompting more and more questions if there needs to be a new pay model, which sparks another thread and another kitten dies.

    It's a vicious circle.

    So please shut up.

Well the new series of Still Open All Hours - which is billed as a BBC Salford production - was actually recorded at Teddington in London despite there being perfectly adequate studios at Media City in Salford. I'll let you decide......

Odd, as I met someone on Tuesday who does some work for the BBC as an extra (in the Midlands), and he said that he was offered 1 day's filming on SOAH in Doncaster (I think it was, anyway up in the North of England) for £90.

So maybe studio scenes in London, exterior scenes (and post-production?) in the North. I wonder if studio availability (and maybe cost) for the duration of the shoot has any impact?

The location where the show's production team are based (in this case Salford) is not necessarily the same location where it is shot, (not even the studio content)

For instance Question Time is produced in Glasgow

Teddington is in Middlesex, not 'London' It has a TW postcode. Its like saying Call The Midwife, an east End story was filmed in Chatham! Oh wait, it was :D

Exteriors were shot in Doncaster, the studio recording was at Teddington, I believe because some of the leading actors didn't want to travel to Salford !

By the way Question Time is a programme always on location, the production office happens to be in Glasgow, it could be almost anywhere.

This depends on how you define London. Sure, it has a Middlesex postal address, but it is part of a London Borough, so to me that is London.

So, by way of your anecdotal claim, you are implying that the choice of production facilities was, in part at least, determined by the actors' own preferences?

I wonder how those same "leading actors" managed with the exterior filming in Doncaster then

Yes I had a look at this posters threads and posts and I would encourage everyone to click on the left side to see the regular themes.

Clearly the OP has found the BBC has been very good since summer 2013 as all of the threads googled are older than that and they couldn't find anything since to quote.

Finally I went to my supermarket and asked 500 people do they think that they should get their food for free and not pay the supermarkets as the food is often the same each week. interesting.... 100% of people thought they should get their food for free.

But less than 40% say the LF should go....

That just means it was commissioned by BBC Salford and all prepared by them.

For the recording, it may have been more convenient for the stars to have it filmed somewhere in London.

Incidentally, SOAH was the very last programme made at the Teddington studios before it gets demolished this month.

Just think of all the programmes made there, both during and outside of ABC Television and Thames TV's occupancy.
