capturing video from youtube software

Hi I thought I had found safe from virus video capture software for use with youtube.
It is called "easy video capture" on the cnet download site. Free

Reviews for it were all positive and no one reported nasties on their computers.

I decided to try it but I did not install on the laptop I am writing this on I used my old xp machine as a precaution. Good job I did it carried a virus and the virus software protection dealt with it. As a result it would not run and I had to reset my browser home page which had been set to blank.

My question is does anyone know of a safe to download youtube video capturing software.! Free if possible. Or is that too much to hope for these days..:(

I am given a choice of "premium download or regular download" Which is the best option for my stated needs. Thank you

I have been reading the forum on the download site and for some there is a technical bug causing some havoc on some setups that has not apparently been resolved yet. (keeps trying to reinstall itself at random times)

It may or may not happen to my set up but I am not very technical with computers and if I get that problem I would be in over my head.

freemake video downloader, been using it for years.

Only thing is when installing make sure you select custom install and deselect the option to install crapware. Aside from that works a treat and can even turn audio into mp3 tracks

An alternative approach is to use video recorder software instead of actual downloading. I user aimersoft video recorder (not free though) but I can record almost anything eg youtube and things that cant be downloaded eg itv iplayer etc. Obviously it records in real time (like a real VCR), but you are guaranteed to be virus free.
File output is WMV but easily converted.
There may be freeware that does same, search web of couse.

I have a couple of things which can do it.

I installed an add-on for Chrome called "Video Downloader Professional" which works well but the set-up is a bit convoluted.
Because, I assume, Chrome is part of Google and so is Youtube the version of VDP you can install automatically doesn't allow you to download youtube video's but it gives you a pop-up which links you to a fully-functional version to install.

I also paid for Realplayer years ago (back when it was useful) and now Realplayer (including the free version AFAIK) includes a little drop-down tab at the top of your browser which, apparently, allows you to download videos easily.
    Never actually tried it though.

Hi all. Thank's for your suggestions. I have been informed of a web based downloader called pwnyoutube and seems to work pretty well with no need to install software on the computer.

If I find I need something more versatile then I will take a look at your suggestions. Thank you all. Malcom

easiest by far is clipconverter website. U paste the copied youtube url into their box, select video quality and format, then just download the file. Web based, no extra software is needed on the computer.

Hi. I can't get that one to work. Throws up an error message about java not being installed. It gives a link to install it. Once again I don' fancy installing anything from a site I don't know to be safe. My computer is new windows 8.1 so I would have thought java comes with the baby ! Or does it.?

Installing JAVA is safe provided you install from JAVA website. Done it loads of times. No point in bundling JAVA with operating system as it is updated so frequently, and it tends not to be backwards compatible, so you do need to update to run new Apps.

I run Mozilla Firefox as my browser and two useful
addons which can be downloaded free and combined
into the browser, are 'Download Helper' and 'UnPlug'.
Both of these will download the video you are watching
at the time,or any media on the page, Mp3, wav file, jpg
    or whatever.

Video DownloadHelper plugin for firefox. Free and easy to install, at least if you're using Firefox. Downloads all vids from youtoob up to 720p (won't download 1080p, probably licence restricted). Might be a Chrome version not sure.

Wouldn't have thought its a license issue. Freemake can download up to 4k resolution if you want,

When I hover the pointer over the pwnyoutube link a whole lot of script appears including java so it seem I do have it already. So the other web site demanding a java download may be leading me up the garden path to a nasty download perhps!

Back to square one now. pynyoutube has stopped working for me. Thus far found nothing else that works. Websites asking for java I treat with suspect because pyn used java and that used to work so I must have java on my system.

Java website seems to indicate I have too...

    Any other suggestions welcome.

best install on pc downloader is probably freemake. After initial install it then needs to download Microsoft's net 4 framework ...... takes a few minutes .......
