Most jobs are now in the service sector, and appearance and social skills are more important than how much coal you can carry. The old macho attitude wasn't particularly natural for men, and was never true of all cultures.
Danielle saying about being put in with 'a load of freaks' reminds me of Imogen's (BB7) infamous diary room rant 'everytime I look in a corner she's (Lea) sat there about to cry holding Pete like he's a four year old.'
