It's not just hours it's also reach, I could be a loyal Capital listener and have been listening to only Capital for the past 2 years, but just because I don't listen for long doesn't mean that I'm not loyal to the station.

Seven million listeners (just now - it could be less in the months to come) across a lot of transmitters, a few local studios across the UK, with a few local presenters, newsreaders, office staff, sales staff, cleaners etc, all of whom need to be paid, as do the bills.

Can you see what's happening? If audiences had been going up or holding steady, the business model may well have been viable. Now, however, with audiences dropping and (we can safely say) no guarantee that the advertising yield will be unchanged because of it, the business model may have to be altered - and a letter sent to OfCom for a format and commitment change, which OfCom will allow (as they have done with Smooth).

Capital may well be a national station with no local programs or local studios in England and a token presence in Scotland and Wales, sharing floorspace space with a Heart (maybe), which in itself will have skeletal staff.

Yes I entirely agree with you (let's not tell anyone, people will talk).

The stark reality is that even if Capital were a fully national operation with studios only at Leicester Square then it would likely still relatively struggle. It is, aftter all, aimed at a demographic that currently has relatively little spending power due to high unemployment, low wage jobs et al.

It is worth reflecting that of our 3 national commercial sations, the only one that has enjoyed continued stable success is Classic FM which genuinely DID fill a commercially viable niche from day 1. Rather ironic given the high risk the project seemed back in 92 but there we go.

Absolute and TalkSPORT have gone through so many tribulations that we can hardly conclude 'being national' is of itself a panacea for all ills. Atlantic 252 also failed despite having just a small operation in Trim with increasingly low paid DJs and a big leccy bill for the TX.

Capital's average hours are very squiffy......the relatively unattractive target audience just don't listen to the radio much as to them it is nothing special like it was for us when we had far less options as kids.....and for that they are still having to pay bills at many local hubs.

We listened to Mayo........they catch up on their phones before breakfast and on the school bus.

Combine the wages of all the local breakfast show teams and, put it this way, I bet it costs a hell of a lot more than Evans costs Radio 2!

THAT's the problem. The significant costs of still physically being 'local' despite being mostly national in practice. Cost savings in theory, but, looked at another way, massive costs for national operations?

Your Smooth example........that happened as all the English stations were regionals and that's why GMG were able to do it when rules were brought in saying it was likely OK so long as the service was also on national DAB.

Capital's regionals (i.e the former Galaxy stations) taking a fully national feed from London can't be too far away.

No, it's for bashing, taking the piss and hiding behind a pseudonym keyboard bashing as the radio industry laughs at every inane comment.[/QUOTE]

I think certain members of this "clique" should put more effort into their programming, rather than being on here 24/7 to see whats being said!

I was a loyal Power FM listener. I've moved to Wave 105 since. I'm only 20 and I'm too old.

Me too, Although I've just turned 28 so I'm probably way out of Capital's target audience.

At least we still get to hear Rick Jackson who did Power Breakfast for many years! :D

Apparently there is new imaging on the way soon. I hope they ditch "The weekend is on..Capital" It get's repetitive after a while.

Think Howard Ritchie will still have the gig? He kind of IS capital now so might be best to stick with him!

They should 'change' the whole 'croaky voice' completely! Sounds like somebody's having a sore throat.

I'm sure he doesn't sound like that normally. Can anyone remember his show on the Mix/GWR network?

Yep, He actually has a great radio voice, but completely different to what he does for Capital.

Capital need to air a classics/Anthems show like that again I feel.
I remember the One Network's Ministry of sound show, used to air from 7pm-1am on Leicester Sound (with an in the mix/non stop style from 10pm), I'm sure Toni Phillips (Current Capital Local DJ) & Gaz wesley (current Heart Local DJ) were part of these shows.
Maybe a School Dayz show should air to, featuring music from the late 90's/early 00's featuring old school dance music, and Classic HIT'S!

Also Talking back to Andi Durrant, I am sure he won awards when he was on Galaxy, especially his Saturday Night warm up, If I'm correct, he aired from 7-9pm on Saturday, followed by Mash?
Surely moving him to 7pm wouldn't be a bad idea, as Capital would surely gain listeners, and possibly win more awards to brag about, but gain listeners too.
Andi's show is what the Target audience (as stated by OFCOM) of 15-30 year olds want to here, its remixes, its urban, its dance music, plus those in there 20's, and many younger such as myself enjoy anthems & classics now and then too.

Talking about new Imaging, could we have the old Galaxy voiceovers back, just updated for Capital. I am sure the man was a lot younger. or maybe even go back to the days when Capital / One Network was more American style voice overs?

Also in the east Midlands, could we have the jingles identified Locally. or instance in Nottingham - 96.2 Capital FM, Leicester 105.4 Capital FM?? I think it would attract more listeners, as the people would think its back to being local again? and will give people a better idea to tune in (than the current 96-106), You cant tune in to it on 97.5, or 100.3 etc, so what the point, they should identify it like on their website, just an idea.

If they update the imaging, could we see an update to the schedule too?

    Friday nights:
    4-7pm Local Drive
    7-9pm Pandora
    9pm-Midnight Andi Durrant
    Midnight-2am Sacha Brookes

    Saturday:
5-7pm Party Saturday (Toni Phillips, or Howard Richie, or maybe even Gaz Wesley, or Hit music network Popular DJ Steve Reed)
    7-10pm Andi Durrant
10pm-1am James Barr in the mix
1am-4am Will Cozens in the mix
4am-6am Throwback mix (like Kiss rehab, which seems to have been removed)

Did I read somewhere, its one of the Kiss Programme directors, and former Galaxy Programme Director thats back in charge of programming at Capital now?
If thats the Case, I feel Galaxy weekend could return?

Local identifiers does not bring in listeners, just add costs. I highly doubt bringing in more specialist programming would also raise listeners. Capital, as far as I see it, with the exception of weekend overnights have got the schedule right, being simple. Listening get a streamlined schedule and know what they're going to get when they're tuning it, at whatever time.

My only problem with Capital is the playlist. Too feminine and kiddies for me. Taylor Swift is a prime example, however even Kiss plays a remix of this song. I wouldn't even consider putting one of her songs on a station like Capital or Kiss. This song seems to be more teenage girls.

If it was down to me, they would play more contemporary dance music and more RnB classics from the past few years probably back to 2008. I wouldn't go further back than that. The station needs to stay contemporary.

I've said before in a previous thread that Capital could do a deal with Ministry to broadcast Hed Kandi. Mark Knight & the rest of their radio shows on the overnights. I do remember Tiesto did a show on Galaxy FM. Plus Hed Kandi (which is now moved to 5am on Kiss) was on at 7pm saturday nights whilst James did HSO clock from 5pm that very same day!

I think what is preventing this from happening is the Ashley Tabor. I don't think he'll be up for it. despite gaining money from MOS sponsorship.

    Kiss will follow capital.

Steve Sutherland Anyone? Mash might be up for the Ssturday 1am spot.

Don't pigeon whole artists, I'm male in my 30s and like Taylor Swift but my favourite and is Radiohead, when will comercial radio stations realise Radio 1 and 2 are successful because they offer real variety, both Taylor Swift and Radiohead would not sound out of place on Radio 2 or Radio 1

Women are the target audience though, surely? 15-35, going through the excitement of being teenagers into having kids and spending a lot of money on them.

Beyond that, I hugely disagree with you on Taylor Swift anyway. A lot of older people like her most recent songs, including myself. I can't abide this 'looking down our noses at decent pop' culture we've got in the UK at the moment. That's not a pop (as it were) at you in particular, just a general frustration.

See, that's the reason I hate Radio 1 because it tries to appeal to too many people, and most of the songs played I don't like. This is why stations like Kiss should stick to proper RnB and dance music and not play songs i.e. Taylor Swift, because sureley that's not their target audience? Same goes to Justin Bieber and Pink.

Problem is Kiss sounds good, and although I hate it when they have stuff like Pink and slow Bruno Mars songs in their playlist here and there, their listenership is higher than ever. If they can get away with it and people like it, they won't stop.

People seem to forget that Capital for example, can't drop in guitar based songs in any volume because of its Galaxy format obligations; they are really pushing their format to the boundaries at present. They have more listeners as a watered down rhythmic station masquerading as general CHR.

Caught some of Hirsty's Daily Dose this morning for longer than usual (normally catch 10 mins or so). I was amazed that the song they played at 7.30am ish (Bruno Mars - Locked out of Heaven) was then repeated at just before 9am!! Is this typical of the brealfast shows on Capital. And if they play Rudamntal one more time and tell me to turn the volume up ....!! Time to change stations I think.

90 minutes is probably optimum listening time.
