I know shopping channels are one of the few services that can afford to pay for channel space but do we really need another one even if it is only for hopefully a couple of hours a day.
So no documentaries about conflict diamonds, the chemical composition of various minerals considered precious or alchemists' attempts to turn base metals into gold? Nothing on the industrial uses of precious metals or history of how South American cultures were looted for gold by the Spanish? Nothing about famous jewels like the Kohinoor or jewellers like Faberge or even Gerald Ratner? No showing of "Breakfast at Tiffany's" ?
How disappointing. What a waste of space. Literally.
One last point - will they take the trouble to spell jewellery properly?
You are right we do need more entertainment channels but the cost relative to return doesn't seem to allow anything other than showing and 'adult' channels.
Also the shopping channels can run for two or three hours a day make some money selling their goods and then swop with another shopping channel and so on it got to be how they do it as there isn't enough room for them to do anything else on the current freeview set up.
The way things are going I think freesat might an answer even it it does mean two boxes under the TV etc.
That's free market capitalism for you. If a channel can afford carriage, a private, profit making, multiplex operator isn't going to turn away money from a legitimate source. And Ofcom, a regulator who believes in free market capitalism, isn't going to stop them.
Either demand the Government replaces Ofcom with a strict regulator who will put in place controls on what channels can broadcast on DTT or vote for a party that will, and that ain't going to be the main four parties!

Since it is a free platform it is a case of beggars cannot be choosers. Indeed Ofcom can certainly regulate what channels are on Freeview and if is not shopping channels or adult channels and the usual cruddy channels it would be nothing.
Freeview is there to replace analogue terrestrial to the masses together with a few other channels that wish to be on there free, and it does this very well. If people want more I am afraid it is pay-time. I do not see a plethora of channels clamouring to broadcast on Freeview for free.
So it looks like either accept the crud channels or get blank unfilled places on the epg, because that is what you would get if Ofcom stopped the cruddy channels.

Fine by me. I would rather have a smaller group of quality channels broadcasting at a higher quality, than I would have precious bandwidth wasted on trash.

I think more than a few people here would agree.
But I thought the point was about the Jewellery Channel 2 launching taking up space and that people wanted to fill with entertainment channels instead as the posts below indicates
It is a shame as we need more Entertainment channels NOT more Shopping channels

Great news that the group that is to deal with our public TV can spell OK....
No wonder that the DSO was rip off , with no new mux's after we gave up space for them.
Now the mux's are going to be a mess with so many full & part time channels all over the EPG as space cost so much that main TV companies are selling of all they can and making our wide screen freeview hd TV a waste of time buying as picture and sound are being put lower to fit more channels with the same space....
Look at freeview wales and a main channel has pulled it's HD channel from 1st Dec 2012, with channel 4 taking it place....it down to cost of space is too high ??? Why is they no action for more mux's, so we can have better service?
It saddens me to think enough people buy this stuff to make crap channels profitable, but it's their money. Rationally I don't mind a few shopping channels, but want to see a variety of channels - if Ofcom has a role it is to put a lid on the number of channels by type and operator, however much cash they have.
But we are in the middle of a deep recession and it could be that there simply isn't enough demand for highbrow documentary channels and the bandwidth really would have been unused.

The Jewellery Channel: Made by chavs and presented by chavs to supply glittery bling to chavs!!

So glad I can delete these channels though but I know there are some boxes that cant.
