How does the miles thing on pof work out?

I'm a bit confused. When i look on the locals bit on pof, one day it will say that a certain person is 1 mile away then on another it will say that the same person is 4 miles away. I thought it was down to what post code that you typed in when you first joined. Am i wrong? If so why does the distance keep changing?
