No, the first one's good in my opinion. And I agree with Johnbee about Chocolat as well, thoroughly enjoyable. Depp's also good in Finding Neverland, so the OP's rule of thumb really doesn't work for me.
Also plenty of Oscar Best Picture winners are wonderful, applying such a pointless arbitrary rule as avoiding them all means you'd miss out on some brilliant films.
I do tend to avoid Tim Burton movies though, and I agree that anything entitled "Something or other 3D" is generally rubbish...
For me its any film advertised with the tagline "staring XXX from 'insert popular film here'" or "Directed by the director of 'insert popular film name here'"

Corpse Bride
Sweeney Todd
Sleepy Hollow.
All great films.... if you said RECENT then I'd agree
They are normally all boring.
This is why you're not a movie journalist.

Why does a certain type of British person hate success?
All of the POTC films are absolutely dire.
8.1 on imdb
87% rotten tomatoes
83% audience score
Also any second sequel that calls itself "Something or other 3D"
And any title with the word "Ninja" in it.

But it didn't win an Academy Award for Best Picture which is what kegsie originally said.

A certain anecdote about George Best, Miss World and piles of cash springs to mind...
If I watch the film and I didn't like it, then I think its a bad film.
