Words used wrongly

What words used wrongly make you angry?

My pet hate is when people use literally when they don't mean that at all. For example, I could literally have died when he came over and talked to me. No, you really couldn't.

And also people who say "It goes without saying that ... " - well why are you saying it then?

I probably used angry wrongly there :D
I meant mildly irritated enough to start a thread about it.

Not exactly wrongly, but extended beyond its original meaning: Legend.

It seems to have developed from a folk/mythical character (eg Robin Hood) to anybody who has achieved even the minimum of success. i recall the actress Lauren Bacall becoming quite annoyed by Nicole Kidman calling her a legend. She replied 'I'm not a legend, as I am still alive'.

    ;)

Words used unnecessarily are more annoying. Beginning and ending sentences with "so". I know I did it just now but that conveyed some information but when people use it with ellipses that's when it's annoying so...

I'm not sure this is the wrong use of a word.. but i've been hearing the word 'ideal' used a lot to mean 'cool'

    That annoys me a bit.

An old chestnut, but the 'fewer/less' confusion annoys me.

    Retard is used wrongly
Is it? I use the word retard to refer to people when they're being a bit stupid. That people are offended unnecessarily because they think it must exlusively refer to people who are mentally disabled makes me want to use it more.

Yes. I can't help but notice it, along with 'amount/number' confusions.

In my personal opinion, the most annoying incorrect use of a word has already been highlighted in the OP's message... misuse of that particular word makes me literally explode with anger!

Oh... and overuse of redundant words/phrases also troubles me slightly... such as beginning a statement with the words... "in my personal opinion"... there's really no need. grrrrrrrrrr.

I hate it when people say

    "I didn't do nothing"

and for some reason add a "k" to end of nothing or something...

    Why?!

    "No offence but ...."

As Fritz Perls said 'Everything before but is bullshit'.

When people say 'wrongly' instead of saying 'incorrectly'.

    ^^^This

It always amuses me when someone starts a thread on the incorrect use of English by incorrectly using English.

I personally am always surprised by the amount of people well into adulthood who say the 'brought' something from the shop instead of 'bought.'

I also get a bit annoyed by the people who think starting a sentence with a justifier automatically cancels out what they go on to say.

'I'm not being bitchy, but.....(they then go on to be bitcy)

I'm not racist but.....(they then say something racist)

'With all due respect'....(they then go onto say something disrespectful)

it means to slow down eg 'The accident caused brain damage that will retard the boy's language development'
