Another Country with a young Rupert Everett is also fantastic.

Numerous references to previous 19 films, the funniest Dialogue between Bond and Q, Some great action sequences. It was clearly a top budget film.

It was definately the strongest script they'd had Pierce Brosnan doing. The man was abandoned, betrayed, tortured and left to rot in Korea before we really saw the James Bond we know return. We all know that Casino Royale beats it several times over but for me the strong points far outway the weakpoints in Die Another Day.

Oh yes, another great one they never show anymore. I remember my flatmate licking the telly when he saw Colin Firth.

The ice palace, the face-altering device, the laser, the invisible/camouflaged car, the diamonds in the face, the groaning in the sex scene, the VR training room, Madonna - it's all balls, yeah?

The diamonds in the face was a nice touch I thought.

I thought the ice palace, laser and diamonds bits were OK. The rest were all balls as you say. You also missed the ridiculous surfing on ice with a parachute bit.
However I thought the villian was good and the first half of the film very enjoyable.

The invisible car and the finale on the plane were just too preposterous to accept (and I'm very good at accepting movie realities).

Anyway back to underrated films, I thought the Crucible had a slow build first half and a truly gripping second half.

I also think the Matrix sequels are very underrated. The common opinion seems to be that they are the worst films ever made. People seemed to be very upset that they weren't as good as the first.

I thought Reloaded was overlong and a bit flat but a decent action film overall. I thought Revolutions was the best Sci-Fi war film since Aliens.

with special effects work of the type seen on the PS2.

Mind you to my mind the most laughable aspect of Di(r)e Another Day is the comparison between Halle Berry & Ursula Andress rising from the surf.

Ms Berry is comely enough from the waist up but her pins wouldn't look out of place on a Russian weightlifter.

Yeah, I know - I was scraping the barrel to prove a point.

I just don't like Halle Berry, because, apparently she's a nightmare to work with, and a complete bitch in interviews.

I thought about the surfing thing, then I wondered whether or not I had imagined it. Yeah, it added to the overall shiteness of the piece.

I thought The Matrix was the dog's. I thought Reloaded had zero substance, was full of lines to be used in the trailer, but had the best action I've ever seen. I thought Revolutions was piss-poor, but to be honest, it looked like it would be.

Edward Scissorhands was never given enough praise. And Man On Fire I always thought deserved more than 4 stars.

I had to check the title of the thread, thinking it was the Over-rated Films thread. No, no, no...A Scanner Darkly is only clever on the animation side of things. Other than that, it's bloody boring. I felt like reading a book (ME!!) whilst I was watching that.

Shame, because the premise is interesting.

Edward Scissorhands did get loads of praise, didn't it? I was only a nipper back then, so I don't know the truth, but I thought everyone said it was great.

I thought Man On Fire was average. I can't think of anything special about it, really.

Glad to be the first to say:

    Dead Mans Shoes

This is the best British film you will ever see. There was hardly any hype about it, it seemed to just pass by. Amazing acting from Paddy Considine and Toby Kebbell, honestly I just can't praise this movie enough. Its in my top 5 movies of all time.

**Disclaimer** \Due to film content its not one to watch on a first date or with the folks.** ;)

    Gattaca
    Sneakers
    For Your Eyes Only

Also Godfather Part 3. It's considerably inferior to the first two, but if you take it on it's own merits it's not that bad (apart from the awful performance of Sofia Coppola)

100% agree with Gattaca brilliant film.

I can't believe I'd forgotten to mention it. You're right - it's excellent. Considine sent shivers down my spine a good few times in that film. He was amazing.

I sometimes defend the second Matrix film here. I wasn't impressed by the first one - very simple plot of the good-guys versus bad-guys type, philosophical ideas that are common place to anyone who reads SF (or Alice Through The Looking Glass), and an unconvincing love story. The second one had more novel philosophy, and a much more interesting plot that is now a 3-way battle with characters like the Merovingian who aren't aligned with either faction. Better SFX, and it isn't so grubby-looking. Plus it's the only one which doesn't mention the "humans as batteries" idea, so we can pretend Morpheus simply misunderstood what he saw.

I didn't like the last one, though. I can't say it's over-rated because (almost) nobody rates it.

    Kiss Kiss Bang Bang (2005).

Brazilian Billy Bob Thornton and Native American Joe Pesci agree with me.

    Ditto to that.

I only discovered Shane Meadows a few months back, and so far I have seen 'This is England', 'A room for Romeo Brass' and 'Dead man shoes' - All pretty low key movies, and all pretty damn good.

Dead mans shoes is the one though. I was the on the edge of my seat the whole time. Considine was truly frightening and the performances and settings were realistic and raw.

    10/10 from me.

I would also say that 'Catch me if you can' is pretty underrated, as in nobody I know seems to have heard of it. A great movie in my opinion. Based on the true story of Frank Abagnale Jr, an extraordinary conman who managed to con millions by forging cheques whilst blagging high paid jobs and impersonating professionals - All before his 19th birthday. The movie is warm, slick, stylish, funny and gripping. I am no Leonardo Di Caprio fan but he nails this one. Tom Hanks puts in a sterling performace too, in a rare supporting role.

I thought it was a nothing movie.
