Microsoft Repair or High Street Replacement?

My X-box 360 has finally given up the ghost and is flashing a single red light at me and saying it's got an E73 error.
Under the norm, I would send this off for repair via Microsoft's (confusing) website. But according to MS, by console is now out of warranty.
Should I get a new Arcade model or am I out of luck in getting a free repair?
