Hi
Been using a new WD external hard drive for a few months but gone to use it today and windows (8) isn't picking it up. The hard drive itself lights and makes the usual noise. Gone into Device Manager and its no showing there, also downloaded WD Data Lifeguard and that isn't picking it up either.
Advice?

I suppose you have tried a different cable ?
connection interface (SATA to USB). This board is (for some stupid reason) encrypted. So taking it out of the case, and
plugging it either directly into the computer's SATA connection, or an external USB caddy, it still might not show up,
as the control board with the onboard encryption from the original case is no longer present.
Sounds like a crazy thing to do and I can't think of a reason why they would do that ..... but you're not alone.
it goes belly up, especially when it's out of warranty like mine was, and they want you to either buy a new one, or
send the faulty one in for expensive (perhaps uneconomical) repair on their terms and conditions.
Sounds more like greed and will probably come back to bite them. I will not buy a WD external drive the next time I'm looking for one and I'm sure many wouldn't if they knew the story ..... thanks for the heads up .
There's nothing wrong with WD drives. Whether WD or Seagate, with both pretty much controlling the market, you have drives that are using very mature technology. You can get lemons with each but most drives from each are excellent.
Why do you say "still might not show up?" Have you tried?
I asked because you said "might not" suggesting that it could work or suggesting that you are not sure that it is encrypted or that that is what is interfering with what you want to do.
I offer this comment from someone in America:-
I have opted for Seagate replacements. Apparently a make called 'OWC' is the best compromise between price and reliability but I haven't looked to see where they can be bought.
It's an American brand that I think only sells in America but you can check. Here is their web site. Great company, by the way, especially if you are a Mac user.
