I have definitely seen marathon runners and race walkers show that they are quitting the race by taking off their number.
I recall pundits saying Bolt was considered to have withdrawn when he ripped his shirt off after that false start. They argued if he'd kept his shirt on he might have been able to claim he was disturbed and got to run.

But on a more serious point, he seems like a lovely person and a bit of an unusual character - relaxed and grinning pre-race, able to run pretty aggressively during it, could be the head turning was showing his competitors what they were dealing with.
I just think that could turn out really well - all fingers and toes crossed that it does.
There is often a lot of criticism of the BBC about not showing field events. They're doing it now and the thread has gone quiet. Is this a lack of interest on behalf of posters that would justify the TV producers' decisions or a sign they're watching so intently that they're not posting?

It might be the lack of British interest the only British athlete seen for the last hour has been Goldie Sayers who is battling for last.
