Sport free on Astra 1/Hot Bird as an alternative to Sky/BT Sport

Shame I'm not a fan of sport as this dish would really come in handy sometimes, noticed the darts thing they are showing from Wolverhampton Civic Hall being shown on Sport1 (Astra 1) complete with all the same Sky Sports graphics and even an occasional logo as seen at a mates house, it had German commentary of course but otherwise no need to pay Sky £50 a month for that one!, a BT Sport subscription could be avoided if you wanted to watch Welsh rally driving too also courtesy of Sport1.

Quite noticeable how other countries do seem to get free sports channels, RAI Sport 1 & 2, TRT Sport in Turkey, Sport1 & Eurosport Duetschland in Germany whilst in the UK not a single sport channel is free to air unless you count the BBC Sport screens that are usually provided for big events that more or less make a BBC Sport channel.

You also get free Middle East football on BeinSports, Al-Iraqia Sport, Dubai Sports etc, if people could get into Football Italia then why not that since it's free to air.

There are also a great many Free to Air temporary Feeds of Sports Events that can be viewed once they've been identified and details published on the relevant sites (eg Satelliweb).

Generally these require medium sized dishes (over 90cm or so) but are easy catches for many of us with motorised installations.

Very few, however have English audio, but given that most Commentators are rubbish, that shouldn't make much difference!

Claw is right with the audio. Many feeds have alternative audio channels you can select and many have with Comms and just crowd noise etc. on many occasions I choose these for football feeds. If that's not possible, I change the audio inputs on the amp and have some tunes on instead.

Do check out the website if your friend has a motorised dish as those like Claw and I use it often to grab some FTA gems.

Hardly an alternative to Sky or BT Sports (excluding the feeds) as very little prime sports are available FTA with the exception of F1, some Europa and Champions league soccer and some Boxing (including some matches that are PPV on UK channels). There is however quite a lot of lower leagues soccer from across Europe and many minor sports available with Eurosport Germany at the moment still FTA with content mainly the same as Eurosport UK.

If you like rugby, Hotbird has got Nuvolari tv (Italian), who fairly regularly show FTA rugby (mainly Guinness Pro12). On 5W French TV (France 2 mainly) regularly shows FTA rugby as well, Top14, some internationals and the odd European game.

For the last couple of seasons Sport1 has shown FA cup matches from round 3 onwards including 3pm Saturday ones as Germany has no blackout. Last season the games often clashed with other events so were pushed onto the encrypted Sport1+

Not sure about this season but they are still listed on the FA's website as a rights owner.

Their's quite a lot of free sports gems on the arc plus channels that aren't sports channels but carry events like our BBC ITV etc [& some we are not too sure if they have the rights]

the catch 22 is if you put them on open forums it can compromise them so you tend to pass them around behind the scenes.

Pro12 more sensible to watch that on regional BBC or S4C than some random Italian channel!

True, but they do show some matches that are not on BBC/S4C. Also I forgot to mention that they also show some Top14.

Davis cup final doubles match about to start on Supertennis in HD on Hotbird. They show a lot of womens tennis but I have caught some Andy Murray matches live on there over the past couple of months. It is an Italian channel.

If it's rugby you're after, S4C offers quite a bit with English audio, as does BBC Alba and BBC2 NI and Wales. Usually good for Pro12 on a Friday night.

That would mean ignoring games not shown on S4C or BBC

Formula 1 fans can watch qualifying and races FTA on the German channel RTL Television (19 east). Handy for the races that are not on the BBC (although the season has obviously just ended, but as far as I know this will again be possible for next season).

Sport1 Germany does a lot of darts, pretty much everything that is on Sky Sports in the UK.

@Marten: Yes, RTL Germany has the Formula 1 rights until the end of the 2015 season. Ratings have declined over the last couple of years, so it's unclear if they'll renew the contract. Sky Deutschland might want to buy exclusive rights for some or all of the races from 2016.

@The Great 208: As of today, there's no sign of FA Cup coverage on Sport 1 or Sport 1+. On the first weekend of January, there's hours of indoor football on the FTA channel and two French cup games on the pay channel.

in October the leinster v munster game was on sky sports and nuvolari

In addition all of italys home November games were fta on dmax italia

and finally the French top 14 is now on nuvolari fta as against sky sports over here and this Saturday will have Toulon v clermont
