Correct. Various republicans have crossed fingers, etc. Tony Benn actually altered the oath, though I've no idea how he got away with that. Tony Banks famously crossed his fingers. Numerous others have mumbled and/or made alterations. The crossed fingers are usually very discrete and not picked up by cameras. Tony Banks's fingers only caused such an uproar because he made it so obvious.

Yes that's true, he was quite a character.

He did not swear in Ann he must have been doing other things, Philip Hammond did not swear in until later on.

Burnham has sworn in, on the catholic bible, it was noticeable that he wasn't with the shadow bench but further back about 15 minutes later.

The TVis on in our office...Burham did swear in this afternoon...and probably used what is known as the Jerusalem Bible because that is the one generally approved for use by Catholics.

The Cof E will use a "King James" (of the sort Gove spent thousands of £ sending to schools)...because (history lesson...that was the version approved following the Reformation for the Cofe and by the CofE following years of squabbling about it)

Non conformists (that's Methodists, Baptists etc) will generally only use a New Testament.

Is Alex Salmond a Privy Councillor? He came forward immediately after the front benches were sworn in. Bercow said at beginning that MP's were to be sworn in via batches based on date they entered Parliament. If there was a break it was the latest date that counted.

According to Parliament Channel the father of the house strictly should have been Ken Clarke as he was sworn in first (in 1970) of the 4 remaining MP's who entered HOC in that year! Apparently he said he had a party to go to and that Gerald Kaufman should be Father of House. :D

The 4 remaining MP's from that intake are Ken Clarke (74) / Gerald Kaufman (84) / Dennis Skinner (83) / Michael Meacher (75)

No doubt the party excuse is a way of making the eldest MP Father of the House.

I read an article in the Radio Times a few weeks ago that said Clarke let Kaufman go in front of him taking the oath in 1970 which is why he now isn't father of the house.

Is this clerk letting people hold the bible in their left hand a mistake? The clerk before was clear that it had to be held in the right hand.

    I think he might be a newbie?:D

He's been holding the Oath upside down too, on occasions.

No different from the planks who get up to the checkout in a supermarket and suddenly realise they need a method of payment. Hanging's too good for 'em.

Ah - different stories. They also said Bercow made sure he was the first of his intake year to sign so that it put him in position to be Father of the House. How surprising!

I heard it said weeks before parliament rose it would be Kaufman...)by Andrew All Hail and DS Forum bow down before him Neil) because he was sworn in before Clarke in 1970...who was absent for that session in 1970 attending a party.

Besides I'd love to know what sort of "party" Ken Clarke is attending mid afternoon midweek that he's not there today ;-)

Nigel Evans said something about the last time he held the bible and made the oath but I didn't catch the end, wonder if he meant his trial?
