Hammond and May are the only train passengers in 2013 who don't seem to know what time their train is actually due to arrive at the destination they're going to. In other words i'm having a hard time taking this 'development' seriously.
The things is with these massive races, I believe them when they say it's not fixed,
but the edit it in such a way that makes it so clear who's going to win that it gives the illusion of it being fixed with the whole "Jeremy was really behind" thing
The producers admit that they do set up the routes and times for the race to be as close as possible, but according to them don't know how close they are actually going to be.
I remember in the bullet train episode Jeremy was about a minute ahead of Richard/ James, noticeable by Jeremy being noticably out of breath when he talks to them at the finish.

You aren't supposed to talk these challenges seriously and a lot has been left out of the edit. Clearly Jezza hasn't driven for 15 hours without stopping for something to eat.
Monitoring the speed of the train is a bit contrived. Presuming it's not delayed, they know when it's gonna reach it's destination cos the timetable will say so.
When you check train times, you look at the time it's gonna arrive at your destination, not how fast it's going on the way there.

I work on the railway and believe me there is a lot of people who get on trains and don't know what time they are getting to their destination.
