    Emmerdale deserves HUGE ratings tonight.

    Emmerdale: 8.13m (38.5%) / 8.37m (39.6%)
    Coronation Street: 9.2m (39.2%) / 9.64m (41.1%)

Brilliant ratings for both. Highest rating of the year for Emmerdale, and highest since the live episode. Could it go even higher today & tomorrow?

Fantastic for Emmerdale, I'm hooked :) Didn't think it would manage it but it proved me wrong!

The overwhelmingly positive response to ED could push it even higher tonight. Here's hoping. :)

I would love nine million, but I am guessing around seven-eight million for tonight.

This must be the first time where I've seen Emmerdale have more positive buzz than Corrie & EastEnders.

It jumped 860k from Tuesday to Wednesday (exc +1). Another jump of the kind would put tonight's rating (an average rating over two episodes) at approximately 9m.

It will be interesting to see how it rates tonight - for weeks now, the 8pm ep usually rates lower than the 7pm ep.

It's not down to the competition as opposite Emmerdale at 8pm last week, BBC1 had only 2 million. But, given the response, I think it will be higher tonight for the 8pm tonight.

This fact may interest some people - the last time Emmerdale passed 10 million viewers on overnight figures was on Monday 21st November 2005 with 10.13m (46.1%).

Eastenders is on tonight though, so Emmerdale may slip because of this. I still think seven- eight million for Emmerdale and I would be very surprised if it got more than that to be honest.

That must be the biggest ever non-clash gap between EE and Emmerdale?

    Yep.

Its also the longest period where Edale has been ahead of EE in overnights on a day to day consistency.

Its pretty sad to see EE in this position to be honest but its been caused by years of mismanagement. I hope people give DTC a chance. He has his work cut out here but I see no reason why EE can't rise again with the right people behind it.

You're asking people on DS to give him a chance?

We'll be lucky to get through his first credited episode without someone demanding him be replaced immediately.

You're right though. DTC has a job on his hands but I think he can do it. He has an obvious passion for the show which previous EPs haven't demonstrated.

When is his first episode airing? It feels like forever ago it was announced he was taking over.

Yaay! Well done, ED! Totally deserved, couldn't be more pleased for them.

Just hope all those extra viewers keep on tuning in now the main drama has subsided for the moment.

(And thanks for the info, dj) :)

Why is there only one rating for Emmerdale?

Barb records ITV's HD separately so we only get a top 10. That episode had 700k on HD and was tenth on the HD list. Hopefully we get the HD rating for the big episodes last week next Monday.

Here's how the soaps are doing in comparison to 2005 (not the fairest, mind):

    EastEnders had 13.15 million (53%), whilst a double helping of Corrie delivered 12.24m (52.6%) and 11.1m (43.7%) to ITV1. Emmerdale had 9.1m (41.4%).
