Will people remember who Guy Mowbray is in 50 years time?

Coleman, Motty and Davies will always be fondly remembered but will anyone know a man who has commentated on two World Cup finals, one Euro Championships final, three League Cup finals and one FA Cup final for the BBC in Mowbray be looked back on in a few decades time? I doubt it.

I think there are that many commentators around on live games now that very few will be remembered from the current crop across all channels. It was different before the 90s where you would only hear around 5 or 6 voices live across the channels. Now there are dozens and many blend (or bland) into each other.
So it's nothing against Guy Mowbray or whoever succeeds Clive Tyldesley as itv's number one. I don't think we'll ever again get a commentator akin to John Motson where virtually the entire public know of him.
You're right. Between 1966 and 1992 in the pre-multi-channel age, it was BBC versus ITV. Whoever was the number one / number two commentator on either channel would cover a wide array of football and all the biggest games. In the 23 years since, sports rights have diversified across Channel Four, Channel Five, Sky Sports, Setanta Sports, ESPN, BT Sport, Eurosport and others. There will never again be a "voice of football" who is widely known beyond the world of the football and who covers all the big games to the widest audience.
Plus, Motson, Wolstenholme, Coleman, Moore and Davies all had distinctive voices and styles. To the untrained ear, there's veyr little to distinguish Mowbray from, say, Bill Leslie.
And Mowbray hardly has a ready supply of catchy, memorable commentary lines. He's a good, solid commentator and that's about it.

Exactly! The arrogance sporting people have that their chosen hobby is everyone's who reason to be on the planet and that everyone simply must and does know who some sporting commentator is. (I've only worked that out be reading a few posts)

Yes its a bit unfair on Mr Mowbray I think. You are right regarding commentators of yesteryear. Not just football, other sports too. The seventies were a golden age of commentary and the names synonymous with the sports they described-but as stated, there were only three channels with the BBC having by far the lion share of key sporting events. If you were on tv in general in the seventies you were virtually guaranteed household name status because so few people by comparison with today were actually on the airwaves.
Do you think many will remember Motty in 2058?

Wrong. Motson would not have committed such an error, he is too much of a trainspotter to say that, he knows Wolves refer to their shirt as 'old gold'.
The actual source of that error was Ted Lowe on Pot Black - 'for those watching in black and white, the blue is behind the pink' was the quote.
