Help with a 2010 Toshiba Satellite laptop

Hi,
Ever since Oct. 2012, my Toshiba Satellite has been telling me to 'replace your battery' when i highlight the power icon on the right side of my (Windows 7) taskbar. Since the start of 2013, however, the laptop won't work without a plug, and if the plug comes out, the laptop switches off.
Also, when I play The Sims 3, it always turns off after 30-60 minutes due to it overheating, but my laptop never did that when I played any other PC game.
What is the best to do with a battery? Can you fix it yourself or do you need a specialist to fix it for you? Is the game shutting down something to do with my battery?
I am from Kildare in Ireland.

You should be able to buy a replacement but the price depends on what type it is, what the rating is and weather you buy and original or 3rd party replacement.
Sims 3 is a reasonably demanding game and maybe working you machine harder then the other games you have played, also the heatsink and vents on laptops often get clogged with fluff and dust therefore causing more heat build up.
It may need a clean out, you can do it with a can of compressed air but it depends on on the machine some are easy to clean out and some are difficult to get at the fan area to pick any clumps of fluff out.
