    The Quiet American - 3/10

It was my 2nd time watching it. I found it as boring as the first time around.

Caught it too on the Beeb the other night. I was looking forward to a movie about the last days of French Indo-Chino and the events leading up to Dien Bien Phu but it was mostly about an annoying love triangle snorefest. I certainly won't be watching this nonsense again.

As I'm here I'll mention the latest viewing in my Kurosawa-thon, Ran (1985). One of his later works and worthy of at least 9/10 imo.

The Night of the Generals - 7/10

I'd describe it as a crime drama set during the time of the Valkyrie plot to assassinate Hitler. Peter O'Toole is very good as General Tanz.

Whiplash - Probably the most intense movie watching experience I've had in a long, long time. Miles Teller's character aspires to be one of the best jazz drummers in the world. He's noticed by the top jazz instructor in his college, JK Simmons who happens to be the most brutal and strict teacher imagineable. The lead performances are off the chart incredible. Simmons chews up his students and spits them back out and yet still can manage to make them feel like they're on top of the world with praise. But then he sometimes lulls them into a false sense of security just to lauch another tirade of abuse. I've avoided a lot of this years awards nominated films since a lot of them don't look appealing to me but I'm now so glad I caught up with Whiplash, a huge surprise.

    9/10

Airport '75 - Enjoyed it! Ages since I've watched that film. Incredible to see/hear Gloria Swanson waffling on about nowt.

    Airport '77 next.

I actually thought repeat viewings of Airplane! might have spoiled my enjoyment of these films, but that isn't the case.

    BIRDMAN .....

    still processing
    :D

what an odd movie, with it's swirling "constant" camerawork, excellent performances all round and it's singular musical soundtrack ..... but it ALMOST BREAKS ITSELF trying to be clever!

notably repeating two things twice and the "dark corridor" editing especially in the last third ..... and maybe because technically it's doing the same thing as GRAVITY did last year THANK YOU MR CUARON ^_^

the review of his play was right ..... this was hyperREAL .....

it's on BBC iplayer at the moment

Horror. A couple grieving the tragic death of their nine-year-old daughter move to a sleepy village. Stumbling into a strange night-time ritualistic ceremony, the couple are made an offer they find difficult to refuse - to have their daughter back. But there are difficult conditions attached.

    Sure is weird, very creepy

    The Eichmann Show (BBC2)
Dramatisation of the team hoping to televise the trial of Adolf Eichmann, an infamous nazi responsible for the deaths of millions of Jews. It focuses on Leo Hurwitz, a documentary film-maker and Milton Fruchtman, a producer.

    IMO an excellent BBC production.

Well cast and the combination of original footage from the trial and atrocities of the holocaust together with the drama makes very harrowing but compelling viewing.

The Eichmann Show is another reminder of the horror of the holocaust and I would definitely recommend it.

    A bit of a catch-up:

    Thirteen Days

Smart, well-executed Cuban Missile drama with the cast (Costner, Greenwood) on fine form. 8/10

    The Mouse That Roared

Fair-to-middling Peter Sellers romp. Has its moments. 6/10

    Avengers Assemble

Meet, bicker, thwart invasion. The light touch helps, but how strangely arbitrary it now seems. 6/10

    At the Earth's Core

    "Hi, I'm Doug McClure..." 5/10

Agree with your review. The professional critics love it of course, just as they love Birdman (I've not yet met a "real" person who likes it: I certainly didn't).

    Last film I watched:

AFTER THE WEDDING - nominated for Best Foreign Film 2006

Danish sub-titled film (so you know it's not going to be a barrel of laughs!) about a multi-millionaire Jorgan who offers to fund a project in India - providing that he meets the fund-raiser Jacob in person. Jacob is passionate about the project - he lives among the street children and the orphanage is about to close unless funds are urgently found, so he reluctantly goes to Denmark to meet with Jorgan. Then things begin to get very complicated and very interesting.
    Excellent, if sombre.

Not a sci fi fan either but the reviews were good... so watched it this morning.

Thoroughly enjoyed it.. it started off high school general horse play but ended up rather dark and compellingly watchable.

I'm surprised enjoyed it so much.. 7.5/10

    LOCKE...
watched this yesterday after great reviews... but disappointed.. I couldn't get my head around the awful welsh accent from Tom hardy... it was ridiculous and sounded like ivor the engine... !! Such a pointless stupid film... and incredibly annoying... no one gets that many phone calls on a damn journey !! 2/10

    You have missed.

Airport (1970) Dean Martin plays a philandering pilot ,Burt Lancaster the overstressed airport boss ,George Kennedy the snow clearance specialist and Van Heflin as a mad bomber. This was based on the Hailey novel ( i havent read it !! ). The main story is about a snowed in airport and a mad bomber, lots of marital infidelity going on. There is a heartfelt plea in the film to "make our airport bigger" , not sure how well that went down with the public then, sounded like it had been inserted into the film for the benefit of airport expansionists.

I have added the others to my watchlist, i am going to follow you along the runway with this one.

Hunger Games Mockingjay Part 1 (2014). A bit like being sat in the waiting room of a dentists. I am not too sure if this can even be described as a film, to me it was a fairly incomprehensible mish-mash of scenes, Lawrence crying and occasional explosions. Aside from the hardcore fans, dont bother, wait for the finale. A Film?/10

New Turtles film - not as bad as I thought it would be, but it looked terrible compared to the 20yo films.

I recently bought the Airport Terminal Pack DVD set for not much. It contains all four films, but I'd recently watched Airport (I owned the standalone DVD), so I skipped it this time.

I watched The Concorde: Airport '79 last night. It is ridiculous and the 'special effects' are abysmal, but I enjoyed it anyway. I found it much more enjoyable than Airport '77 (which is the only one of the four that I probably won't watch again). I'm definitely not selling on the DVD set.
