Long-serving Doctor Who designer, Barry Newbery, passed away peacefully this morning at the age of 88.
Barry Newbery was one of the most prolific designers of Doctor Who, working on more episodes of the classic series than any other designer in its 26 year history. His contribution ranged from the very first story An Unearthly Child in 1963 through to The Awakening in 1984, a total of 62 episodes across 14 stories.

Oh how sad. Another one of the greats of the early days has left us. The current show stands on the shoulders of people like Barry Newbery.

    Sad news.
Barry Newbery was responsible for some of the best remembered design work in Doctor Who. Not least the fact that he worked on the very first story. By all accounts the scheduled designer, Peter Brachaki, wasn't happy on Doctor Who and apart from the TARDIS console most of the work was done by Barry Newbery.
Barry himself got to redesign the TARDIS interior totally in Masque Of Mandragora.
He was well known for his attention to historical detail - very valuable in Mandragora, and of course in the 1960s he'd done the big Hartnell historicals - Marco Polo, The Aztecs, The Crusade etc.
But my favourite Newbery designs are those in the Brain Of Morbius. Despite being a studio bound recording the planet of Karn is wonderfully realised and the interior of Solon's 'house' is just perfect - creepy and dark.

RIP Barry. Big contribution to the look of some wonderful stories. Well said, Chuffnobbler. Cool that he was there during the first 5 eras of Who.

Edit. Nice stuff, adams66. My standouts from the list of stories are the Hartnell stories, Doctor Who and The Silurians and am very fond of the look of The Awakening. That church interior is superb.

Agree with Adams and Michael: The Awakening is a great little story, and the design is hugely effective; the feature on Marco Polo in this month's DWM is very timely.
