We had BT Sport for free on Sky via a BT broadband sub and were told it was now £3 if we wanted to carry on watching in HD and twice that if we wanted this in HD on two boxes. Maybe they were offering a deal?

Maybe that's via Sky for via BT TV with Youview Its £3 month for at last 12 HD channels with BT sport HD add in as part of the HD bolt on pack.

It was via Sky, which is why we added Virgin for our broadband because that offered BT Sports in HD for free.

Had it not been ridiculously dear to add BT in HD via Sky we would have stayed all Sky.

BT presumably did this to persuade people to take broadband with them instead of Sky. Unfortunately, we had moved to a house without any BT connection and they could not even offer us a decent broadband deal because they would first have to set a line connection up and then offer something after what would have been a several week gap. Which was a no go given that Virgin was already fitted to the new house.

I can see why you went with Virgin but are Virgin not as dear as Sky if not dearer depending on what package you take.
Virgin is not in all parts of my town and not in a good few streets in the bottom end of town where I stay.
Virgin seem to have stopped expanding there cable network across the UK.
