Nearly every main character and most guest stars in the last few years of Doctor Who have had their sexuality shown, whether it be with a minor love interest or a girlfriend or boyfriend shown or a past love interest mentioned. To throw in an example, some people have said that Amy's heterosexual relationship with Rory makes her more interesting/endearing.

Exactly.

Moffat and Davies should have went off and made a soap opera cause thats obviously what they wanted to do.
I`ll look out for that episode of Dora the explorer, Dora tries and alternative lifestyle and God now hates her.

What are you on about?

It's not a soap opera, it's TV writing in general. All TV shows nowadays address character's sexualities.

And if there is a serious threat to the future of humanity... then I want the Doctor and his companions to focus on that, not what gets their personal motors running.
Well said.

Maybe people's sexuality should be their own business and nobody else's? There seems to be a tendancy for some people to either want to be or end up being defined by that alone when it's only part of what or who they are and to be honest I'm far more interested in the whole character than what they do behind closed doors (or wherever).

Could this be an example of trolling, currently being discussed in another thread? I just ask out of interest, of course.

Sexuality is about more than having sex. Donna's sexuality was as much front-and-centre in Forest of the Dead when she imagined herself married, or Rose when she flirted with Captain Jack.

We're talking about a TV character, not the actress playing her. I don't care what Jenna gets up to in her private life. I just set up a thread that gauged the opinion of whether or not it was time we had a gay female companion on the show. Also if the character were gay, it wouldn't be the be all and end all of her in the same that the majority of the companions being straight hasn't been for them either.

I don't know where you got the idea I was talking about the actress? I just don't like categorising people (including TV characters/companions) just by their sexuality, most people are a lot more complex than that and I'm more interested in their complete personalities. For example being omnisexual is an obvious characteristic (for want of a better word) of Jack's but there's an awful lot more to him than that.

Do you ever wish there's some questions you'd never asked?! Even though you yourself, at that moment, thought that it was a current, topical question?

Another popular phrase I've heard in the Doctor Who forums is... "I'll get my coat..."

I quite like the idea of a lesbian character. It's not something I can remember seeing front and centre before. Doctor Who covers the whole universe, not just the 90% on Earth who are straight. Well, 1 in 10 was the last "gay count" I heard. Mind you, after a few drinks...

Agreed. Doctor Who is a family show. Isn't that what Torchwood was created for?

That wasn't done with Rose, Jack (original DW appearances), Mickey, Martha, Donna, Astrid, Christina, Adelaide, Amy, Rory or River whose sexualities were evident. I think you underestimate the writers.

As for the second crisis, impending doom is felt more significantly when it threatens the human and the personal. I didn't care as much about the abstract millions being bombed in The Parting of the Ways as I did for Rose, the Doctor and Jack and the choices and sacrifices each made.

As am I too. And having a gay companion would obviously not be their defining trait either. The Doctor wouldn't treat them any different and neither would most viewers.
